Yezzir, once led to an above ground pool, now pulled down.

Son planning on resetting the tread boards and cutting off part of that upper portion of deck. He's been restoring/remodeling/framing with a crew all over 2-3 counties, but never has time for here, lol.

I got too broken down to do much over the last couple years.

Yea, I've got about 6 gourd houses spread around, plan on putting up 8-10 more as I get time, various sizes, got bluebirds, "gully" Martins and purple martins, house wrens, etc fighting over the houses.


Some seeds from the birdhouse gourd I cleaned out early spring sprouted right below that railing and a large gourd vine is sprawled across about a 10' circle and growing.

Looks like the Ozarks. I have a farm in wright county.

You got a few more hills, this is my wife's place in Gibson County, more bottomlands and hills (Gulf Plain is the geographic area), whereas my place in Carroll County, easternmost part of Gulf plain in Tn is in the 10 mile strip just west of the Tn. river (Ridges and hollers on the lower Tn river Bluffs /highlands) is more similar to the Ozarks.

Nice area, only problem is the homemade stilling laws, sure wish it was in AR, I'd be renting a spot from you for a few weeks each year, hehe.

I may just see if I can talk my wife out of one of last years pints, may be a fight. Haven't canned any this year, course , it's never as good as my fresh or the local mex's fresh!!!!

But it would never make it up there without spoiling in this heat, brother, wouldn't want a sick household on my hands/heart.

I take my cilantro and jalapeno peppers along with any huitlacoche/corn smut(a delicacy to some of us Injuns) I find as well and we eat good at my local Mex restaurant. My wife nor the manager would touch the Huitlacoche, hehe.

Only two of the ladies there knew about it and we really enjoyed it. She made me a big quesadilla with the huitlacoche, peppers, onions, YUMMMY.

I will even eat the pieces raw before they get real black, hehe.

Prolly a silly question, but are gourds good for anything besides bird houses, drinking containers, tribal decorations (cough cough), etc.? Are they edible?

nah, a good question, there are quite a few edible gourds, most are ornamental or have been manipulated by man to use for containers, etc. These (ornamentals) you always want to plant away from other melons etc. Just in case any cross pollination, which causes bitterness

Actually cucurbits, melons, squashes, pumpkins and gourds are the same family (aced Botany in college, hehe).

Quite a few varieties and the largest fruit/vege in the plant family. A pumpkin, you've seen the contest.

Spaghetti squash is a gourd.
