Here is a picture of me on the Kalalau Trail on the island of Kauai a few years back. It is an incredibly beautiful and intensive journey. 11 miles from beach to beach. Sea Level only at the start and end of the trail. I lost 15 lbs on that week long trip. 2 days in, 5 days there, and 2 days out.

Sweet, another hiker. Nice picture. I started hiking a few years ago when I lived in Kansas. I used to take long weekend trips to wilderness areas in the Ozarks (Southern Missouri, Northern Arkansas) lots of good hiking there. I'm in Puerto Rico now and the rainforest is only 45 minutes away.

Hey, another backpacker!

Looks like a nice hike.

I hiked that trail on a very sunny day. There were huge waves pounding against the cliffs that shook the ground, and every 200 yards it went from sun to shade to sun. One of the most exhausting walks I have ever made.
It was so worth it, one of the strongest memories of my life.
If you want scenery, this is the place!

I got a late start on day one, and I didn't want to over do it on the way out, that is why I made it a two day. It was the hardest hike I have ever done. When you met people on the trail, 1st thing is, hey, where are you from, and 2nd is ... man, isn't this trail a b@ll buster! ... I met people from all over the world. 20 ft waves, a mile long are not out of the question. Waves all the way from japan striking the shore shaking the ground was an incredible feeling. Erie feeling there at night ... I felt like I was on the moon. I dont know if anyone else heard this, but the sound of the waves at night bouncing off the prehistoric volcanic moon like rock sounded like helicopters all night long. I felt like I was so far away from home out there ... cool and strange at the same time. Incredibly beautiful ... saw humpback whales, too!

Man that brings back memories. I grew up in Hawaii and hiked that trail at least 20 times. That was before the helos were allowed to fly in and most hikers wore only a backpack and shoes!

I met 3 guys that were living there at the beach. Cool guys that had 5 gallon buckets stashed up the hills so when the rangers were there to run off the squaters. Every night the "squaters" would cook a community meal, and we sat around, told stories, drank rum, and smoked ...(?)(!), ... They each had a kayak, and one day, a hiker busted his knee bad. One of the squaters took his paddle, and scratched out a giant S.O.S. in the sand. I have a cool picture of the Helo flying in just barely off the beach and I took the picture of it over the S.O.S. - He then came in for a landing and took the injured hiker out. It was a trip I will never forget ...

The 5 gallon buckets were full of supplies for them to live off of while the rangers were there. That whole trail used to be a haven for hippies back in the 70's ... I had to sign a release from the Park Rangers at the courthouse to get a permit to even hike the trail. The permit said that I would not stay there over 5 days.
