New York gun law lacks cop exemption
New Yorkās new gun control law, passed after a quick legislative deal in the wake of the Sandy Hook massacre, reportedly neglected to exempt the stateās active and retired officers from having high-capacity magazines larger than seven rounds ā less than half the amount that most of the stateās law-enforcement officers have.
State officials are looking to amend the law in the sixty-day window allowed to make changes, according to WABC-TV.
Itās a glitch in a bill thatās received strong praise from gun-control advocates, and that earned New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo praise for his effectiveness in quickly getting new law passed while Washington officials lock horns over new federal proposals.
A Cuomo spokesman didnāt respond to a POLITICO request for comment but told WABC that ācurrently no police officer is in violationā of the law. The law has not yet taken effect.
