This is the guy on the Honduran Nation Football Team that missed a goal with a wide open net against Costa Rica. The game ended in a tie, with Honduras losing in the "overtime". Moral of the story is my wife's cousin is now the national "goat" because he let the overtime kick through. His mistake made the cover of the national newspaper. Everyone seems to have forgotten the two easy goals this guy missed early in the game.

Goalkeepers take and get the responsibility, personally and publically, for every goal let in regardless of what happened in the other 90+overtime minutes of the game. It is part of the position and it takes imho a mental giant to play the position.

It is typical though the primadonna striker that gets paid 6 times the keepers wage and gets the glory and the keeper ends up being the scapegoat.

castlewa - There are definitely exceptions to this rule. The first one that comes to my mind is Peter Schmeichel, one of the greatest keepers to stand between the posts at Old Trafford.

Ironically enough, Manchester's current starting keeper, Tim Howard, is someone I played against quite frequently in club ball, as well as regional and national ODP.

My wife's cousin is a defensman, but the ball got by him during the kick. Apparently, they all stand in a lilne. As for the article, it was in spanish. I lifted the pic from a FIFA site. I believe it was for world cup qualifying, but not sure. The game was on UNIVISION last week.

You mean Roy Carroll or are you talking Champions League play ;)? Howard lost his starting spot at the beginning of the season.

Schmeichel let very little get by and his blooper reel although at times hilarious is pretty short. How many titles did ManU win with him between the sticks? League titles and UEFA Cup trophys take the sting out of the blunders.

A defender gets the heat on own goals or lack of marking. If he was standing in the wall perhaps he moved? It is a bummer regardless and it happens in all sports. Problem is most other sports don't have fans that are as passionate as the national team fans abroad.

When I played (brilliant or frigging) goalie (depended upon the score) they made no bones about sticking me with the loss.....with little credit for a win. I could kick a ball 3/4 downfield and set up the winning goal and all I would hear was how fantastic the forward was. If he missed and we lost...it wouldn't be the # of saves or blocks...it would be the one I let get by. (I wasn't very good anyway...so I deserved the rag a few times).

I preferred individual sports anyway. Knowing fellow goalies from camp...it was apparent that many goalies aren't much in the way of "team" mentality. Like pitchers and quarterbacks. You don't play well with others but enjoy positioning and giving direction.

castlewa - I was unaware that Tim lost his starting position. Unfortunately, I've been out of the loop in terms of international soccer. I used to keep track of Serie A and the Premier League religiously, but these days I'm lucky if I manage to catch a highlight let alone watch a game. Let's hope he wins his position back. It was nice seeing a fellow Jersey-boy representing the world's best club.

I played my entire life, through my first 2 years of college. I had to choose between sports and getting a proper education, so I chose the latter. Although members of my club team were rarely 'authorized' to go out for ODP, those of us that were invited were given the thumbs up 2 years before college, so I was 16 or 17. I have to say, there's nothing like training at Nike Headquarters.

Hey Steve - being a Jersey native, I've also played the game all my life (although at my age I've slowed down a bit and don't circumnavigate the pitch like I used to). I played semi-pro ball here in Florida with the Gold Coast Soccer League - and some very famous professionals also played in the league to keep fit. Muller. Cubillas. I was scared ****less to tackle them! If they pulled up with an injury, I'd be the one to blame for ending their career (LOL)!

I could just see your wifes cousin being hacked in a hispanic league game and injured then the Hondurans would be really upset. I referee Hispanic division 1 games and they are not always pretty!
