Tyson was a flash in the pan. Great fighter but doomed by his own actions.

Tyson was very, very good for a short time however he lacked the necessary discipline to stay at the top of his game for very long.

You want to talk about the best heavyweight ever, consider Joe Louis Barrow, aka the Brown Bomber - Joe Louis. Heavyweight champion for 11 years and 10 months. Louis knocked out 23 opponents in 27 title fights, including 5 world champions.

I never understood why people would pay to see less than 2 minutes of a Tyson fight.

i agree with you about louis being the best example of a long time champion,

\but i saw this fight as a 15 year old in 1947. i was never a fight fan but

someone had a tv and i wanted to watch. the odds were like 8 to 1but it was

rumored at ring side, louis wasonly 2 or 3 to 1, by people at the fight who

knew walcott.

walcott took louis to the cleaners. this is part of the fight which walcott really

won but the judges gave it to louis. walott's corner told him he had the fight

and stay away from louis in the 15th round to preventlouis from getting a lucky

punch an knocking walcott out. louis left the ring for the hospital before the

final announcement.

IMHO for the time he reigned, there was no one I ever saw who could dominate an opponent like Tyson- not Louis, Marciano, Ali, Foreman, Frazier NO ONE! Michael Spinks, a pretty formidable light heavyweight who arguably beat Larry Holmes (another great heavyweight) practically swooned at the sight of Tyson in the first round. Then, the cantaloupe- headed Buster Douglas put an end to the mystique. It quickly unraveled after that culminating in a loss to a blown-up heavyweight, Holyfield, followed by a nice ear snack.

That's a great link, thanks Rick!

Jersey Joe was one of the slickest heavyweights ever. I always liked his boxing style and the judges definitely robbed Walcott that night.

lots of great fighters mentioned, but going strictly by the OP, Rick has a good argument...who could throw the one blow with maximum force? I was only about 8 or 10 when Johanson fought, but wasn't he the guy that broke Patterson's jaw?

^ I remember that sad fight.

Also sad to see the fighters like Ali develop Parkinsons or the Quarry brothers (Jerry & Mike) submit to Dementia Pugilistica(sp?) due to accumulation of blows over time.

Random moments of clarity for the senile sometimes mean the end is near. Anyway I have to agree with Rick, Tysons rib crushing body blows made many buckle only to expose the chin for the split second he needed to KO many of his challengers. While the guy is a complete idiot who needed a full time thinker to help him through the day, Tyson's power was second to none.

Not a great version but still a great song.
