My Dad had a friend that lived in CAhokia, worked out of the Pentagon, wife didn't even know what he did. I have old postcards from Turkey, etc. he would send me.

West Tn. is a BIG Cards fan base. We had the opportunity to go to both years to the Series!! This fella could get tickets, but with 4 kids, and a Full Service/Service/Gas Station, in a small rural town, we couldn't afford to go.

Bob Gibson, Lou Brock, Tim Mccarver and Ted Simmons, were all players that I admired and followed, and luckily I was able to go and see them play, met a few on the field as a kid.

My Little League team celebrated a title win one year, and my Dad's friend was able to help with ticket prices, etc, we washed cars, begged, etc. And my parents and a few others took all of the team and stayed overnight, saw a game. That was a real treat for all of us, my Dad still laughs at an episode or two from that trip. Some had never been. I had gone with my parents and one older Sister a year or two before.

Great times.

Yessir, you are correct, Maxvill, Cepeda, Flood, the Javier dude with glasses, even Roger Maris was in outfield. Carlton is right as well as big Mike Torres. I was young, but collected baseball cards, so I have quite a few of the later 60's and early/mid 70's. ACtually remember the 70's guys more, but BOb Gibson was SO dominating!

if I have to win one game to avoid death, I just might have to pick Bob Gibson over Sandy Koufax, despite the nagging from my Rabbi. No one ever was nastier than Gibson, and he could hit. Koufax, maybe the worst hitting pitcher other than Dean Chance.

Yeah, you beat my Sox, but I loved them Cards.

as long as this is a Cards thread, many here may be too young to know that before the migration west of the Dodgers and Giants (when train travel between cities was reasonable) St Looie was the team of the midwest, far west, and south. They planted roots that flourish today.

just remembered Nelson Briles (or something like that). Gimme enough time and I might get all 25. Google need not apply. I was 14 and quite aware in 1967.

That's the one thing that helps sets us apart from the younger generation, we lived, breathed, and died by our teams. All we had were baseball cards or 6 month old magazines that we read over and over again. Tiny transistor radios. Game of the Week. No ESPN, no CBSportsonline.com, no Google. You either watched or listened to it live or you were SOL. I poured over boxscores (...when we could get them...). Facts and figures? You either knew it or you didn't, you couldn't whip out your Smartphone and look it up.

Was a good game for the Cards! Don't know if they have the staff to get by the Dodgers though.

The Buc's future looks very bright with their young staff and they should be one of the front runners next year.

That was one helluva game!

The shadow, was HELL on the batters, may have given the Cards slight edge, but not much, if any. After all this is the only time of the year it is in that terrible creeping spot in the afternoon.

Loved the old Stadium, haven't been since this one was built, I'm OVERDUE,

but,

WHO designed that new place like that?????

The pitching from both squads has been pretty dayum good.

Same with the Sox/TIgers.

I think I do, if I could find 'em in one of the many places I have stuff stored, LOL

Give it up, how'd you become a Cards Fan?

Post #5 pretty much summed it up but here's more detail: so yeah, the first live broadcast into Hawaii of the World Series was in '67. We even had a color TV so I *think* it was also the first live color broadcast of a sporting event too. IIRC, we had a Hitachi. So anyway, watched the Series with my Dad (...who was a BIG baseball fan...) and became hooked on the Cards. After that followed them as best I could thru the Sports section and boxscores but by then was busy training our dogs (...we showed Smooth Fox Terriers...) so baseball wasn't always first on my plate. However, Gibson's '68 season was one for the ages so can still pull 1.12 outta my head. When they lost to the Tigers it was a heartbreaker.

Time has eroded other details about how I followed the Cards that but they've never left my heart as far as baseball goes. It wasn't easy though. There weren't any radio broadcasts of St. Louis games into Hawaii, San Fran and the Dodgers were the 2 that were regularly brought in (...they still are...) so other than when the Cards played them or were on the GOW TV broadcast, never got to hear or see them. Oh...but wait...maybe there is one more reason - my Dad also loved cardinals, the bird. Was it because of the baseball team? Maybe. But they are a majestic looking bird and we put out a bird feeder and he'd still out in the back porch just watching the birds come and eat. Gave names to them too.

Interestingly enough, that color television was also the reason why I'm a Green Bay fan. Although I knew about the Packers (...first newspaper headline I remember is "GB Beats NY For NFL Title"...this would be in 1962 in case you were wondering...), the Ice Bowl sealed the deal. But we're talkin' about baseball so 'nuff on that.

And no, no Baseball Digests laying around. Probably couldn't afford them so never had much of a collection to speak of.
