Lately, I've developed a taste for scotch. I've always liked and appreciated it, but lately I look forward to it. The bottles I have right now are:

Balvenie Doublewood 12 yr

Laphroaig 10 yr

Jura Origin 10 yr

Highland Park 12 yr

Dewar's White Label

Recommendations?

Macallan - If I could only have one scotch it would be Macallan.

Ardbeg 10

Talisker

Bowmore 12 yr at least, 10 yr is awful IMO

Craggenmore

If I only kept five on hand, it would be the above.

Highland Park

Longmorn 15 yr

Balvenie Double Wood.

Lagavulin 16

Bunnahabhan

LaPhroiag ( out of that at the moment)

And for those who don't like single malts

Glennfiddich (I know it's a single malt, but ehhh, it is a good simple one to introduce someone to if they are hesitant)

Drambuie

This is what I normally have on hand. It's a wide selection depending on my mood. It also is wide ranging enough to satisfy just about anyone that may visit. Heavy on the Islays, and light on the Speyside, but I have them because that's what I like.

They sell blends, column still production etc, I don't care for them.

ETA - the whiskey that has the most sales in Scotland is "the Grouse" which is a blend from a column still.

The alcohol is continiously produced and blended with single malts from pot stills.

Chivas, Johnnie Walker, J & B, etc. are all blends.

I try them neat first, then with a small amount of water. When I add water it's about a third of a cap of bottled water to approximately 1 finger of scotch and then go from there. I've found that takes the edge of the alcohol burn off and lets me taste more of what's there.

I was drinking Highland Park earlier, but I'm back on the Laphroaig. With a Quesada Oktoberfest. Merry Effin' Christmas.

That's about right. It seems to unlock the flavor.

This thread caused me to have an Ardbeg.

Scrumptious.

Scotch makes you happy.

Went to a scotch tasting event in St. Louis one time with two friends. I think they had 5 tables set up in a U shape. We happened to sit at the end table. Other small groups came in and sat at the other tables. We all kinda kept to ourselves in our little groups. They put out little buckets for spitting out the scotch after tasting it. Right there we all got on a level playing field when we started laughing. :-)

We had scotch from all the different areas. I remember some being very smooth and some being very harsh. There were a couple of guys there doing the presenting. I don't recall too many of the details now. Long time ago.

Anyway, by the end of the night we had pushed all the tables closer in and had all become good friends. Well, it only lasted while we were there, but from the beginning of the night to the end was a quick scotch fueled social bonding event.

o:)

Oh, and I like 18 year old Macallan. Frequented a little cigar shop there in St. Louis where a guy built a walk in humidor and a handmade bar in the back with cigar bands laminated in. I really liked ordering the 18 year old Macallan and smoking a Hoyo De Monterrey Excalibur. On different nights I might try a different cigar, but I always stuck with the Macallan.
