I was there, as you know, and while we occupied it... it was relatively quiet. HUGE waste of taxpayer dollars. Let Iran and Iraq kill each other. Let 'em both mess with Israel... Israel has the balls to nuke the bastards. When the dust settles, we can go take their damn oil. Fork'em.

...and I don't believe that our soldiers were allowed to fully capture this city due to legal & procedural impediments which endangered them as they fought door to door. In the end, some sort of "agreement" was made with the city's religious strongman which left his infrastructure intact. A loss of American lives for NOTHING.

My last tour of duty ended in July of 1990. I didn't re-up. At the time I didn't desire to be part of another Vietnam type situation, which in my mine is exactly what has been going on since then. As far as what we accomplished, we spent untold billions of dollars to prop up the military contractors and oil companies at the expense of thousands to American lives and the US economy.

At the end of the day, that region is still controlled by the same tribesmen we sought to wrestle control from. Perhaps a different person or group of people, but members of the same or similar tribe no less. Surely our "leaders" foresaw that when we got involved since there was not a perpetual plan to take over and occupy. Which begs the question: "Why?"

One would think we would have learned something from the French and ourselves in Indo-China and the Russians in Afghanistan. What was started by Bush has been perpetuated by Obama.

Maybe MSNBC can give us an update.

We never learn because we figure that we can succeed where the last group failed...because we are stronger, more determined, smarter, and so on. What we refuse to learn is that limited wars rarely succeed.

Can you imagine what would have happened if Truman had decided to simply drop boots on the ground into Japan toward the end of WWII? We'd still be mired down there, almost 70 years later.

That ain't how you win. Germany was bombed into rubble during WWII, then the rubble was bombed. We built the only three nuclear weapons in the world at the time, tested one of them, and dropped the two that were left on Japan...after we'd fire bombed some of their other cities into ashes. Both enemies were fanatically determined to win at all costs. Both lost because they ended up with totally ruined cities and a decimated population with nothing left to eat but twigs and leaves. They both surrendered unconditionally because they had no choice. Only then did we extend a helping hand so they could rebuild, peacefully. Neither former radical enemy has caused any problems whatsoever, anywhere, since.

What would help everyone get over this quicker is a war with Syria or Iran.....or both.
