Wasmund's Single Malt Whisky

Unlike anything I've had before.

On the nose I'd say closer to a scotch.Stone fruit, smoke, vanilla and some unidentifiable aromas.

On the palette it kicks off more like bourbon. What first hit me was an unidentifiable semi sweet taste.....then it breaks down into a woody, not oak a much sweeter woody taste, cinnamon, apple,a little vanilla and stone fruit.I've got to say at this point Macallan 18 came to mind.A lot going on here I just can't identify all of it.Don't get me wrong....no one that knows scotch is going to confuse this with Macallan 18 but the complexity at this point is much the same.

The finish is excellent......as it rolls off the tongue it's slightly dry, again in a woody sort of way but not oak dry,and herbal with just enough warmth to remind you this is a whisky. The finish is quite long and evolves into a tobacco taste that I really dig.

I paired this with some Hal o the Wynd,a Virginia and perique blend from Rattray's,in a cob.I can see where a cigar would go well with this also.

Thanks again to CRGCPRO for the opportunity to try this excellent and unique whisky.

Very nice. I'll pick up a couple of bottles. The fruit you tasted was dried fruit chutney with honey and spicy orange marmalade (from their website)

I'm also going to pick up their barrel kit and age some bottles myself.

I think a few more years age would only magnify it's already wonderful qualities.

Four roses single barrel last of that bottle. Gonna have to start buying more bourbons again. Been spending my booze money on beers lately.

Picked up some Monkey Shoulder Triple Malt Blended Scotch a couple of weeks ago. Didn't notice until after purchase that the importer is Wm Grant, the maker of Glenfiddich. Some additional research disclosed that the three malts are from Balvenie, Glenfiddich, and Kininvie, all Speyside makers. It's aged in once used white oak bourbon barrels and made in batches of 27 casks. The relationship to Glenfiddich came through fairly predominantly in my first sampling. I don't get all that excited about regular single malt Glenfiddich, although the 15 yr Solera version is nice, but I found that I started liking this Monkey Shoulder whisky more each time I had a dram or two and I could detect the Balvenie notes in it. I've never had Kininvie so couldn't speak to any likeness there. The price on it was $29 for 750 ml bottle which is pretty decent especially in Oregon where the state run liquor store prices are laden with taxes. As noted it's a blended Scotch but it certainly drinks more like a single malt. It's reasonably smooth, a slight bit of sweetness, vanilla and caramel notes. It's worth a try and for the price point not a half bad pour and makes a good accompaniment to an Aroma de Cuba Mi Amor

Thanks, I solved some technical issues that were impeding my posting and have gotten some work related bandwidth issues down to a dull roar. Sorry we couldn't get a chance to meet the previous time you were up this way. Maybe we can coordinate it this time.
