I always thought they started as a bunch of criminals banished there. When did the founders become hard working patriotic god fearing types?

Kind of like some evangelical christians in this country. They want to make Christianity the official state religion in this country and get things back to the "good old days" when women stayed home and kept house and had babies. I see a lot of comments on this site about how horrible it would be if some Muslims in the US lived in accordance with Sharia Law when there are communities of Jews living in the US in accordance with Hasidic Laws. In either case both beliefs/laws are abrogated or are superseded by American law.

Why do you assume that different or native cultures are backwards?

My point on native cultures is that we assume by our standards that they are not advanced and backwards or primitive. They were going about their lives probably being happy and content in the own way when we kicked in their front door and started dictating what they should or shouldn't do, etc., etc., etc... under threat of violence or death.
