It seems as if we may have released 5 Taliban members from GITMO, in exchange for an American POW whom may have actually deserted.

Is anyone else concerned about the precedent of our negotiating with terrorist for this man's release?

Did we essentially put a price (5 high ranking Taliban members released in exchange for one American soldier) on American soldiers heads with this negotiation?

Was this legal of the President to even negotiate?

Can anyone tell the class what the penalty usually is for desertion in a time of war?

Seems rather odd that the Taliban let this soldier live. Not normally their MO.

I have mixed feelings about it but in some ways we seem to want to have our cake and eat it too.

If the war in Afghanistan is truly over in a traditional sense this is a prisoner exchange and has always happened. Under GWB we went through great pains to tie them to the war to make sure they didn't have certain rights. If the war is over ........ It could be argued they all should be released (or charged with some sort or war crime)

On the other hand I thought those still in gitmo are the worst. I'm not comfortable releasing them at all. But where does the law fall? At some point we do need to follow a legal process and not manufacture another silly yet convienient one for us.

Maybe these guys will find their demise in Qatar.

As for our guy I hesitate to smear somene who has been through what he presumably has until there is very VERY solid evidence to do so. Its too easy to sit here getting fat playing mmqb while others do our bidding. I'm not suggesting no one look in to it if there are descrepancies, I'm just saying I don't have any info and I'm not about to smear a soldier as part of some conspiracy hobby.

To be clear my first gut impression was wtf. When did we start negotiating with terrorists. Then I started to think about it more. Not sure where I will ultimately land.

I dunno. I didn't follow this much yesterday. Listening to things this morning makes me more uneasy.

Apparently it's OK to break the law because the Administration can't trust Congress???
Don't tell Congress because it may be leaked.

I think Bush did a great thing getting this prisoner released.

Wait? What?

I think Obama did a horrible thing getting this prisoner released.

I heard we implanted explosives in the Taliban guys necks and they will explode in ten days anyway... 😟

We rarely do exchanges with known terrorists.
We never negotiate with known terrorists.
When we finally do these things, we learn that it was ordered illegally and for a probable deserter.

I can't wait for Obama to simply deny and deflect all questions so that a month from now we can listen to the liberals call the questions absurd and accuse those who ask for the truth of being racist.

I heard something similar.
Only it wasn't in their necks.
And it was TW doing the "implanting".

OMG!!!

I thought the Kenyan King closed Gitmo??? He said he was going to.

Now we negotiate with terrorists...cool.

When are we gonna drop a nuke on them? We need to see if ours are still fresh. We might be holding on to a bad batch.

So we traded 1 AWOL soldier for 5 high level terrorists?

Does the AWOL soldier look like the Kenyan King's son?
