Everyone wants to forget Marino and Gabriel...funny...their legacy is steady though.

Barry Sanders. Best running back in the game when he played... never won a title. He was better than Emmitt Smith, but he didn't have nearly as much surrounding support. Emmitt did what he did thanks to Herschel Walker and a STUPID Vikings GM.

Dallas was able to get solid offensive and defensive lineman, which is what really wins NFL games. Trench players make the skill players look great. If Barry had Emmitt's blockers he'd have broken Walter's records 4 years sooner than Emmitt.

MACS, to me the rings do matter. I'm not saying if you don't have rings you aren't great, just that I don't consider you top 10 unless there was an incredibly dominant team that kept you from getting there. In Malone's case that would be Jordan's Bulls. In Peyton Mannings case that would be Bradys Patriots. If I was picking great quarterbacks I would start with Montana and Brady.

There are certainly many other factors that determine a players greatness. To me the reason the the rings matter is because the greatest players play great in the biggest games.

So is Robert Horry the greatest NBA player in the Modern era? Maybe Dennis Rodman should be considered the 5th best because he ranks only behind Horry, Jabbar, Jordan, Pippen, and is tied with Magic, Michael Cooper, Ron Harper, Derek Fisher,Steve Kerr and Kobe for the most titles won.

Just wait for game 2, I may eat these words but I think LeBron is going to play with a "huge" chip on his shoulder, because of the media storm about the cramps, watch out!

That was a great movie BTW. My point is a lot of these arguments are ridiculous. They are a bunch of great players on my list but there are a couple of dogs too. A lot of winning a title is just dumb luck and the basketball gods shining on you. Hell if Pippen did not have his migraine in game 7 of the '90 Eastern conference finals versus the Piston "Bad Boys" he and MJ might have 7 or even 9 if MJ didn't take that time off for his baseball fiasco. As my brother Kipp said...Shoulda... Coulda... Woulda.

OK your point makes sense. But my point was not winning rings makes a great player. It was great players win rings. The exception is when 1 team is so dominant that a great player does not win a ring. If you want a top 10 list from me it would be as follows. Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, Karl Malone, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Oscar Robertson, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Michael Jordan, Hakeem Olajuwon, and yes Lebron James. Unfortunately I just hate the way he left Cleveland.

Bullcrap. He averaged 22 points 7 rebounds 7assists in 43 minutes per game and shot somewhere around 30 %. He shot terribly yes but look who he played with...Drew Gooden, Daniel Gibson, Sasha Pavlovic, Zydrunaus Ilgauskus, Anderson Varajao, Damon Jones, Donyell Marshall, Eric Snow and Larry Hughes... Stiffs each and every one.

He played against Timmy, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, Big Shot Bob Horry, Bruce Bowen, Fabricio Oberto, Francisco Elson, Michael Finley, Brent Barry and Jacque Vaughn. 3 HOFers, One of the best defenders ever, The most (Some would say) clutch shooter ever, a two time Western Conference AllStar, A Slam Dunk champion, and a bunch of capable system players who knew their roles.

And really do we need to go here... Pops.... Who is the 2nd best coach behind Jackson in the last 30 years in the NBA versus some poor shmuck who has been fired at every NBA head coaching job he has had. My money would have been on the Spurs. All of my money if I had been a betting man.

Also he was all of 22 at the time. Name one player who had even come close to winning a championship playing such a role at that age.

Thank you, Erik. That was my point, but I didn't want to research all the players.

Mike never even sniffed the finals until he got his help. James got there with scrubs and got whooped by a far better team.

And as far as how he left Cleveland... yeah, it was a little bush league, but lest we all forget it was for money - and ALL that money went to CHARITY. It was with good intentions, but came off smug.

Is this about the NBA? I can't believe people watch it the way they do. I could care less about the NBA anymore mainly because the game is just boring anymore. I do like Lebron though and saw his interview with Wilbon yesterday. I thought now how come this guy that went to the NBA right out of high school can speak as if he has a college education but others that went to college sound like they can't read when they open their mouths. Lebron never will be MJ and MJ never will be Lebron that is how it works when 2 different players from 2 different eras are compared.

By the way why is there this thirst to compare someone to MJ? Is it not ok to be great in your own time or do you now have to be great and better then a legend?
