6 pounds 4 ounces. I was a little disappointed that it didn't put up more of a fight. The carp I caught was a beast of a fight and weighed almost a pound less.

Did you take 'em home or let him go for some other sportsman to enjoy?

All the years I fished as a kid and through my 20's never got anything bigger then that, congrats.

macs that is a nice fish. don't think i've caught a largemouth that big before (some would argue my wife did lol). I caught a smallie not quite that size that fought harder than some northern and muskie I've caught.

Hey macs... does it help you catch more fish when you dress like a lure?

Shockingly, I think it does. I'm more of a comfort guy than fashion.

I am purely catch and release when it comes to bass. Crappie and catfish will occasionally be taken for food, and the carp get taken for wildlife food. They want the carp removed, so they tell us to leave 'em on the shore for the birds and coyotes. There are a pair of bald eagles nesting somewhere close by. We see them once in a while.

What kind of carp are in the lake? I'm assuming that since the bass are growing that large that the carp are quite big too? Carp can kill a lake fairly quickly if left alone. I've never released a single carp back into the water. If I catch one some lucky critter or bird gets a free dinner.

That fish looks a bit hungry to me. I mean, that fish should weigh a bit more with a head that big if it were in ideal health.

I still wouldn't call it a dink. Nice Catch!

Great Fish . . .

A couple of my friends that were at the cabin with us this past weekend went fly fishing on the Toccoa River and caught their limit of trout.
Not near the size of your bass, though . . . LoL

That is the carp. Carp dig through the mud and they uproot aquatic plants looking for food. They disturb the bottom so much that they can muddy up any lake. It's one of the main reasons they are a problem fish. They can muddy the waters so much that native species that hunt by sight starve because they can't see their prey. The plants they uproot can't regrow because the sunlight doesn't penetrate as deep as it used too. Young carp also eat all of the algae eaters and algae blooms can start to lower the visibility even more. Carp are just plain bad for any water system they aren't native to. If you catch a carp, crack it once or twice in the head and leave it in the bushes for the local critters to eat. [ram27bat]

just a word of advice... it's illegal to waste any fish caught in the state of california... this includes carp and white bass, and game wardens take it VERY seriously...

if the game wardens are giving you the ok to bank-ditch fish, that's one thing... if it's anyone else, I'd be cautious...

I know it seems ridiculous at best, but the ticket is around $500... and while many game wardens recognize the spirit of the law, others are only interested in the letter of it... the easy solution is to take them home and fertilize the garden... this was actually a topic of discussion in a recent CDFW question and answer session...

As for the health of the bass, looks perfectly healthy and normal to me given the heat of this summer and the lack of fresh incoming water into the lakes and reservoirs...

I commented on another thread of yours that I guessed they stocked blue channel cats in your lake... Largemouth eat hot dogs in lakes where hot dogs are used for catching catfish... it's conditioning... they get used to finding discarded hot dog pieces that catfish fisherman leave behind at the end of the night... especially common under docks...
