Growing up ('60s), we would spend a week camping in the Cuyamaca mountains every August. My mother would buy canned bacon; product of Hungary as I recall. Haven't seen that product in years.
It was very salty straight out of the can, but if you rinsed it in plenty of water it was pretty much indistinguishable from any other bacon.
