Baton Rouge Blacks Rethinking ‘White Privilege’ As Wealthy White Suburb Threatens To Split From Citywpaw2

“White privilege” is that thing that blacks and white liberals claim allows white people to get educated, gain employment and stay out of jail. It is used an excuse for the underachievement of blacks and vilified by those on the left. However, blacks in Louisiana are rethinking their hatred of “white privilege” as a wealthy white suburb of Baton Rouge is threatening to secede, forming its own city and taking a huge chunk of the tax base with it.

The BBC reports:

More than 18,000 residents in the suburbs south of Baton Rouge, the state capital of Louisiana, have signed a petition calling for the creation of a new city called St George.
The community is currently part of East Baton Rouge Parish, which also includes the city of Baton Rouge itself.

The reason for this split is simple: residents who work hard are sick of their tax dollars going to prop up a sh*ithole city and they would rather see their money go to improving their own community:

The campaigners claim they simply want to improve the quality of local schools and to ensure that taxpayers – who currently contribute roughly two thirds of funds to the parish – have more control over the money they contribute to fund services.

But this move would be devastating to the mostly black city of Baton Rouge:


Opponents insist that the proposal is also motivated by race and class. They point out that the new city of St George would be 70% white – and that the mainly poor and black community in the rest of Baton Rouge would face crippling cuts to education if it lost the taxpayers who provide most of its revenue.

And because white people want to reap the benefits of their own hard work, it’s racist:

“The St. George breakaway would have some very serious racial consequences for the city of Baton Rouge, issues like segregating the schools. We just don’t think it’d be right for the wealthy, predominately white part of the city to break away from the less privileged, majority black part,” said opposition campaigner Celeste Reynolds.

Parroting the position that white people have an obligation to pay the bills for blacks was East Baton Rouge Parish School Board member Domoine Rutledge who said, “You cannot simply abandon the poor because you may have the power and the muscle to do it.”

Proponents of the split deny any charges of racism, explaining they want control over their resources to build a stronger community:

“You know it’s unfortunate that the opponents try to pull the race card,” responded St. George spokesman Lionel Rainey III. “Race unequivocally has nothing to do with this. Public schools are bad here. We want to take control of our public schools. It’s a real problem and race is the last thing that’s on anybody’s mind.”

“We’re trying to create a city so we’d have our own mayor, and have our own city council and the tax dollars would stay here and we could create a school system here.”

What this boils down to is: White people are evil and racist except when they are picking up the tab, in which case they are all right. That “white privilege” that has been keeping the black community down suddenly looks pretty good because it funds a majority of the services in the parish.

Way more to the story and much less sinister.

This has been done successfully once in Atlanta & tried about 3-4 or more times. Of course, the cries of racism started to chant.

Everyone forgets all about Detroit.

What about Detroit ?

They don't feel the need to pay their water bills ?

Atlanta is a cheap imitation of Detroit.

What happened there since the late 50's...there's a term for it. White flight.

Atlanta, just like Detroit is a rotten inner city surrounded by enclaves where delusional people think they're safe.

Baton Rouge is a chit hole. Secede!

Why does common sense have to be called racism? It is not. Wanting better public services based on taxes paid makes sense.

It seems the main reason is to improve schools but I'm not too sure schools are at the city level. That seems more like a county function and the county will still bus in inner city kids to this nice upscale area.

It's actually more than just schools. The proponents of this contend that a disproportionate amount of tax dollars are being spent in areas outside where those dollars are being collected.

Isn't that really what taxes are in most cases? Until fairly recently (oil) places like North Dakota reaped that benefit year in year out.

This argument is why we have the senate and house structured so differently. It's gerrymandering on some level.

I don't want to be annexed by Kansas City for the very same reason.

So 13 seconds from a win is the same as a win.
