Saw his last American show here in Hawaii. I didn't think it was too good but others have said that he was great that night. We sat in the Loges slightly behind the stage and at one point Jimi broke a string and just threw his Strat at the roadie. And when I say "threw," I mean just heaved it at the guy. Maybe 10-12 feet away. We could see his face, he looked pissed. But still it was an experience (...yes, pun intended...) and when he died a few weeks later, we were devastated. I still have the handbill from the show too.

No, there are no known (complete) recordings of the show here. He played on Maui (Rainbow Bridge) before doing the Honolulu show. IIRC, the Rainbow Bridge movie soundtrack was incomplete too. Subsequent boots of the two shows were also incomplete, afaik. There was a 2-CD French release that was supposed to be complete but it wasn't. Audio was fair to good as the wind was blowin' up there (...not the best place to hold an outdoor show...).

So influential on so many guitarists. Can you imagine how much more he would have accomplished were it not for his tragic demise?

Yup, always wondered "what mighta been" had he not OD. But if you listen to the stuff that came out after he passed away, you can tell he was moving in another direction. How well and how much he woulda moved is, of course, just conjecture. Sigh....
