"Rock and Roll was born in the South. Calling something, Southern Rock, is like calling it, "Rock, rock." - Greg Allman.

Jimi Hendrix - The Essential Jimi Hendrix

Forgot that I had this set. In the vinyl days this was a 3 record set, Volume 1 was 2 LPs, Volume 2 a single album with a bonus 45 rpm that had Jimi's version of "Gloria."

Remembering Jimi Hendrix showing up unannounced at the free jam sessions at the Tampa Men's Garden Club. 1970. My friend and I would get our parents to drop us off (because we were too young to drive). We said it's OK to drop us off at the street - we don't want to be a bother...or have them see the crowds that showed up. They thought "isn't it nice the boys are interested in gardening". Well, we WERE interested in herbs..........

I missed it back in '69 but Jimi gave a free "make-up" concert after the scheduled show (...the night before...) had technical difficulties with the sound. I saw him when he came back in '70, it was his last American show and still have the original handbill. And yes, almost all of us back then were interested in HERBS...just not the cooking kind. 😉

cacman ... What is so total bull**** & out of context about the quote?

Here is the full quote ...

“The way I see it, there are four kings of rock and roll, two black, and two white. One would be Jerry Lee Lewis, out of Ferriday, La. One would be Elvis Aaron Presley out of Tupelo, Miss. Another would be Little Richard Penniman, out of Macon, Ga., and the other one is questionably about the South, kinda a little north, but really sort of southern is Chuck Berry for St. Louis, Mo. Rock and roll was born in the South. Saying Southern rock is like saying ‘rock rock.’ It was formed from the blues. It’s the only type of music America has a claim to.” - Gregg Allman, Jan. 4th, 2014 Palm Beach, Fla.

Oh, and I'm listening to Conway Twitty, It's Only Make Believe.

I like it so far...I was cleaning out the barn listening to it today. It's a collaboration with other artists like Stevie Wonder, Gwen Stefani, Charlie Wilson and Pharell...it's more pop hip hop than anything with a smattering of jazz thrown in...and a dash of funk.
