I do not plan on an endless argument, but I'd like to comment on your post, if you don't mind...

I never heard that Rock Hudson liked boys, but I have heard he liked men.

Disagree that back in the old days gays didn't feel the need to "flaunt". I believe it was more like they didn't need the physical beating and bullying that would ensue from the largely intolerant society at the time. And over time many have come out (or flaunted as you say) in acts of bravery to end the self imposed shame of life in the closet.

"Flaunting" will likely stop as gays are accepted with full rights and privileges afforded straights...or "breeders" as I've heard us called!

To be clear, I wasn't talking about simple, mature, respectful protests.
We don't hear the homophobe complaints about those pesky gays marching in an organized protest. Protests need to have an agenda in addition to being outrageous. Assless chaps don't command respect.
TW being the exception.

coincidently, just watched A Football Life-Jerry Smith

in all likelihood, if we all watched this we'd all come away believing it supports whatever each of thought going in. Some will say it proves the world was better when gays stayed in the shadows and just lived in denial, and that Smith seemed just fine with that.

Others will pick up a sense of lost opportunity to gain traction toward being considered different-yet-normal.

What is undeniably clear is that some of Smith's motivation to be quiet was the make-up of his personal human nature, while some was to make sure he never would lose the opportunity to play the game in which he excelled, and which he loved.

Terrific player, and apparently a wonderful man.
