I never heard that Rock Hudson liked boys, but I have heard he liked men.
Disagree that back in the old days gays didn't feel the need to "flaunt". I believe it was more like they didn't need the physical beating and bullying that would ensue from the largely intolerant society at the time. And over time many have come out (or flaunted as you say) in acts of bravery to end the self imposed shame of life in the closet.
"Flaunting" will likely stop as gays are accepted with full rights and privileges afforded straights...or "breeders" as I've heard us called!
