Johnson said authorities currently don't believe the crime was politically motivated, despite the disparaging remarks about Trump.

"I think some of it is just stupidity, people just ranting about something that they think might make a headline," Johnson said. "I don't think that at this point we have anything concrete to really point us in that direction, but we'll keep investigating and we'll let the facts guide us on how this concludes."

You're right opel, the first police response was to avoid calling it a hate crime. But that changed very quickly. I don't see an issue there. By the time I saw the news it was labeled a hate crime.

I don't see an issue. The initial police response was probably to avoid calling it something that is hard to walk back... I think they do this in most cases.

Yeah.
If they don't act stupidly, of course.

Are you serious on this one?
Local news broadcasts here in Boston were openly questioning the Chicago police refusal to label it a hate crime.

I don't like the hate crime label, but you're missing the point BIG TIME on this.
Banana peel littering vs. torture.
and you try to nitpick about the semantics and how they can't "take it back".

Except it was called a hate crime, very quickly.

Is there a time frame in which you think something must be called a hate crime or there's a clear double standard? 1 hour? 3 hours? what?....

I heard about the event, checked cnn, and it said the kids were being charged with hate crime. That's quick enough for me.

Barry and his DOJ has set that precedent. Well in one direction......

I think the issue is that anyone from the pd had anything to say one way or the other... don't call it a hate crime right out of the gate, fine... but why come out and specifically say that nothing indicates it is racially or politically motivated when the bulk of the evidence upfront downright disputes that statement?

Is the complaint about the media or the police?

Some here are complaining that this isnt' being "blasted on every channel as a hate crime" (it was)
Others are complaining that the police were reluctant to initially call it a hate crime (they eventually did, and I would say very quickly... kid was found tuesday, and by thursday the police were charging them with hate crimes....)

It's a victim mentality....

I really hate that they can't find CROS that fast.... 😞

The victim and a couple of his attackers were friends before the incident, so that made the police reluctant to label this a hate crime. Having a previous "friendly relationship" means there are many other possible motives to assault someone besides the victim's race. Not sure why the police ultimately concluded it was, and charged a hate crime...possibly some outside influence...

Without ME assigning a suitable timeframe, all I can do is use the local media (Boston Fox25 and Boston ABC WCVB) as a barometer.
They both questioned WHY chicago cops refused to label it a hate crime.
They both reported how Lexington MA cops immediately labeled a banana peel as a hate crime.

Same media outlets (in a liberal state).
Cops in liberal cities (albeit very different size).

The only obvious difference is the color of the victim versus the perp.

In other words, the questions are rhetorical.

Or, as delta pointed out in another thread it could be because the victim and the suspects knew each other and we're supposedly friends prior to the incident...?

Seems to me something like that might be a rational reason to not immediately label something... but you keep demanding those immediate hate crime judgements.

I mean... the only difference MUST be the color of the victim and perp... you know... except for the idea of a consistent (albeit stupid and mostly impotent) harassment vs a single violent incident from a group that had previously been friendly with the victim.

That must be those black people's plan... to be friends with us before posting our future beatings on Facebook live so that the crime isn't immediately labeled as a hate crime until a day or so has passed! It's so devious! Someone should warn cacman.

the rev jesse jackson had a difficult time staying on topic today when interviewed on cnn. also couldn't bring himself to say hate crime. He kept generalizing that these evil acts are happenng across the country and should not be tolerated. he is truly a great politician.

It seems the judge wasn't impressed by the 4. She is quoted as saying they are all menaces to themselves as well as society. She denied bond for all four. We can only hope she stays the course.
