Sitting on my deck, enjoying a cigar and reading about the arrest and resignation of our governor. I'm not going to make any sort of partisan statement - people are people, regardless of their personal views. Just when one gets out of prison (Democrat), another is arrested (Republican). Not exactly proud of my adopted state right now.

At least I didn't vote for either of them....

I heard a statement about politicians in general that stuck with me over the years. With absolute power comes absolute corruption.

Campaign and legal fund misappropriation. There may be more to come.

Other than his wife not maligning his mistress and him going on to be elected president, his story reminds us of a former governor of Arkansas ...

Burner can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think 3 of the last 4 governors have either gone to prison or, in Bentley's case, been arrested. It looks like he's struck a deal to stay out of jail.

Believe it was written of monarchs, but I don't know the complete context:

Lord Acton, expressed this opinion in a letter to Bishop Mandell Creighton in 1887:

"Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men."

Depending on how one counts, it either is 3 of 4 or 3 of 5.

Bently (present) is getting what he deserves.

Siegelman (99-03) got what he deserved.

James (95-99) no problem with the law.

Folsom Jr (93-95) no problem that I recall.

Hunt (87-93) Baptist preacher, Amway salesman and should never have been governor but at the right place at the right time. State Dem party tried to rig the election by ignoring the voters and the party got the middle finger in the way of Guy Hunt. An yes, poor Guy ran amuck of the law.

Convicted politicians usually just get lightweight time in a Federal prison - easy time compared to what the general public gets.

one thing about me and you (might end up being more than one) is we have gotten along respectfully for years now while having political differences. Whiskey similarities, Cubans, even jokes...but we have political differences. And that's no problem for you and me. Others are unable to separate though.

I believe the reason for our civility is we don't do what the Gov of Alabama has done in life...i.e. preach morality (OK, not a professional "preacher" but bible thumping leader in his congregation) while living a life of deception.

I disagree with you fairly regularly, nothing yuuuge, but I see you as consistent in that your behavior mimics your words. I hope I am seen in the same light.

But right now we have a GOP hypocrite and it is just killing posters to admit what I keep pressing here...neither side owns morality. People can cloud the issue all they want, they can conjure up Bill Clinton as a diversion all they want, they can get the dogpile flock nodding in pius agreement all they want, but this is now, this is real, and he ain't the first nor last right winger to be getting his wick wet where it don't belong.

There will be more from all sides, it's what they do. But some fall in love due to similar political philosophies and believe against all reality that their guy is America's Sweetheart. Get real folks.

Righties and lefties are equally immoral. No side owns morality. Raise the exchange a notch above the self satisfying "we're better than you" level.

Burner, I used you here. Sorry.

Hypocrisy, lies, moral lapses, etc. are the province of both parties. Jackassery will not be contained by a D or an R.

Not sure there are any non-hypocritical, honest politicians.
