And honestly... no one has a right to anonymity when they post something. You have a right to not post your personal information. But if you put enough crap on the internet to make it feasible to track who you are... and you post inflammatory enough crap that someone is curious who you are, you should be strong enough to accept the publicity.

they agreed to not identify after he agreed to cease and desist. I don't know how direct or indirect the deal is but CNN retains the right to publish who he is if he continues. If he doesn't continue they likely won't (but still can) I'm not sure where you are going but it is amusing

He can continue..... or not
They can publish.... or not

The situation is not secret..... the name has not been released. Maybe they just should release it.... this really was not to their advantage

agreed 100%... but if that someone who is curious is a person in position of power - police officer, judge, enormous news organization - and abuses that power to discover or disseminate that information, then I'd say there's a problem... that's like cyber-bullying on horse steroids...

I don't know if a formal "deal" was made but apparently there was an agreement (for the benefit of the bigot). Maybe it wasn't a legal deal or completely spelled out on both ends but it doesn't matter much to me. CNN is likely saying there is nothing binding which is likely true. At that point you are arguing minutia which distracts but doesn't add much.

And no I have not looked for CNNs take on it. I suspect it would be biased, or at least have that appearance, and I don't think they've really gone much beyond the original statement. thus I wouldn't completely hang my hat on it. The quit listenening to cnn thing is as old as quit listening to mort... its cheap

CNN chose to not publish for the benefit of the bigot presumably based on what he said and did. They still can if he continues (thus shows he doesn't mean what he said to them or said he would or wouldn't do) or just because they want to.

its not complicated or blackmail. and IDGAF about CNN. It just makes no sense that anyone would think they thought they could stop CNN memes. that's just silly (if cnn thought that). I don't think they are that stupid. you may. Alex Jones for 100 alex.

I don't think or act like it's great. I don't really have a dog in the hunt. I don't love or hate cnn.

The President tweeted something unprecedented through the official Presidential account. CNN researched it as I would guess many other outlets are doing. In doing so they uncovered a person with apparently other bigoted posts etc... and maybe... links to the whitehouse. maybe not.

They contacted the individual (routine...just like they contact the white house following leaks to give them a chance to respond) to geve the bigot a chance to respond (journalism 101) and the exchange ended with CNN willing to not release the name (but not bound to in a "deal" or "agreement") and the person indicated remorse, or embarrassment, a desire not to be identified and that they would quit (but also not bound to a deal or agreement). Both can do whatever they like.

no threats... no trying to do the impossible in squashing memes....

but no not great. i wish the whole thing wasn't happening and we had an adult president that didn't tweet such things nad respected the office.

We will find out more. If it was blackmail or threat I'll admit that. I don't mind admitting when I'm wrong. It just doesn't add up though, and I suspect we will find that it wasn't like that at all. I'm just calling it as I see it, and what I think is down the middle but thats not tollerable when you hate an entity and it doesn't fit your agenda.

don't mistake calling this like I see it as supporting CNN or the news media just like hating the news media should not drive you to accepting false stories that bag on them.

I'm beating a dead horse and it's getting repetitive. Meh lets see. I don't see any blackmail convictions coming anytime soon though.

I could care less honestly, other than the fact that a media outlet has more on their plate than bullying a private citizen.

we will clearly never see eye to eye on this... we agree on the facts for the most part... but what I view it as a reprehensible attack on a private citizen by an enormous organization that wields the power to destroy peoples lives by airing their personal information to an enormous national audience, you seem to view as justifiable because you think the private citizen was a "bigot"...

We will never see eye to eye if you keep characterizing my positions to fit your model. I'm not justifying anything because someone is a bigot. I disagree on the reprehensible attack on a private citizen part or the bullying part (and certainly blackmail). That's where we disagree. Those are conclusions to fit a your agenda rather than facts.

If I accepted that part as true the bigot part would have no bearing.

If we find either to be the case I'll admit it. I just don't see it that way.

I doubt he did... I watched the story evolve this morning on 8chan... it was silly... everyone knew he was a 30-something year old (he posted something about being a teenager back in the 90's I think) but one guy mentions it's a 15 year old, everyone else starts rolling with it, then someone started saying he was gay and cnn had threatened to out him, and that didn't stick at all because of how outlandish it was, but the 15 year old thing stuck... weird... in 2 weeks if you ask 10 random people about this, at least 3 will still think he was 15...

... this sort of fits under "if you're gonna do the crime you gotta be prepared to do the time"...

He posted inflammatory crap for attention anonymously. It got bigger than he anticipated however that was ALWAYS the risk, whether he knew it or not. Your boss could read your dumb azz posts at any point in time, just by dumb luck. Anyone you know may at any time run across your anonymous posts and put enough info together to figure out they know you in real life. This is just a difference in scale.
