I think the empathy for DACA is because they don't quite fit the "illegal" definition in a sense. We Americans tend to equate criminality/illegality with a specific intent to do the crime. With the DACA immigrants, they were minors (below the age at which they can be legally charged with intent to commit a crime) when they came across. They also did not come on their own volition: they were dragged in by their parents or other adults. So, they didn't have the intent to be illegal...and most have made the best of it...
