too lazy to check, but wasn't the penalty for an American possessing a Cuban cigar anywhere in the world extremely harsh?

I don't think anyone was ever given the punishment but I seem to recall the Gov could slap a fine of multiple thousands of dollars and up to 14 yeas in jail...

that ain't jay walking stuff.

It's a misdemeanor the first time... If they come back they are felons.. I'd bet way over half of the illegals are felons... How many do we deport everyday..?? 😕

It seems that the Trump administration is now charging first-time illegal immigrants with the crime of illegal entry, and then deporting them after their sentence.. In the past, most illegals were only deported, so past practice had been that it was not treated as a crime if you were caught in the US illegally. Now it is being treated as a crime.

Either change the law or punish them thoroughly. Actually even if you change the law it shouldn't be retroactive and those cuban cigar smokers should get max punishment. You don't want to encourage breaking the law because it might pay off later.

send them all to jail, fine them.... then work on a solution

Has Trump stirred up animus against immigrants, or has he just tapped into a latent but heartfelt belief among some Americans? Until he occupied the WH, it seemed inevitable that there would be a comprehensive immigration reform plan passed. Now, it does not appear likely that it would include humane treatment of families, DACA or pathways to citizenship.
