Hockey playoffs are here!!! Pick your team and wager a fiver of super premiums (legit premium cigars --- no hyped up MSRP value cigars sold at deep discount---no dog rockets) for each round of the play-offs. There are four rounds of play-offs, so the winner will snag 20 cigars/4x5; winners of Conference Finals (3 rounds) will win 15 cigars/3x5; 2nd Round, 10 cigars/2x5; 1st round, 5 cigars.

Players will keep their teams for the duration of the playoffs. Losers must send their wager within a week of when their team is eliminated to the player whose team won that series.

The contest will ]only happen when we have a player for each of the 16 teams*(see post #33 for updated contest rule)...picks are made on a first come-first choice basis.* Players may pick a second team. Post your picks here, ASAP. Players must have been here awhile and have a made a few trades, or have a vet vouch for them.

edit: 4/11/18 1pm PT To encourage more participation, players that are matched up may propose, and must agree to play for a fiver of good everyday cigars rather than super premium/special occasion cigars -- (no turds still applies).

Boston - Whistlebritches
New Jersey
Tampa Bay - Lets Rock
Toronto - delta1
Washington - NapalmMan
Philadelphia - dpnewell
Pittsburgh - gummy jones
Columbus - Phil222

* edit, 4/10/18 10am : If we don't have every team selected by the start of the first games, maybe the guys who picked teams that are matched against each other in the first round will want to play, and then "we'll see what happens"...

I'll take the um..... so, so hard to decide..... give me a minute...

Philadelphia Flyers.

Now, since I never pay more then $2 for my cigars, you'll have to explain what is acceptable. I mean I have Dunbartons, My Fathers, non-infused DE like Undercrown, Nica Rustica, Herrera Esteli, Don Carlos, etc. Would those be considered acceptable?

Well, I better go pack up a 5ver for who ever picks the Penguins, lol. I just love giving away cigars.

Oh, and being a noob, these folks will vouch for me.

#'s 4 & 5 (wizearses)

I used to be able to claim that I heard on radio or watched on TV every minute of Bruins seasons for years on end...

I more or less stopped all that when pro hockey cheapened the way points are tallied, specifically but not limited to giving a point to a team that lost. How can that be considered major league quality?

Growing up during the last years of the original 6 team league, I used to put a transistor radio under my pillow and listen to the Bruins. They and the Rangers never made the 4 team playoffs, but the games were so exciting. The players still gave it their all trying to be "spoilers".

And some of the most exciting games of all were when the score was tied in the last minute or two. If neither team scored again in regulation, it was a tie and each team got one point...perfectly sensible.

Then came massive expansion, regular season overtime, and more national TV exposure, and the fear that new fans needed more.

Now it's cool to go to overtime and lose. Ya still get one point! WTF? You lose and get a reward? Pfffft.

Next time don't hold back. Tell us how you really feel.

Back in '72 when I was in 9th grade, Gene Hart who was the Flyer's annoucer for years, was also a teacher at my SJ High School. He brought the team into school for a presentation. I met Bobby Clarke, Bernie Parent and the entire gang, so I started to watch. I got on board just in time for the "Broad Street Bully" years, and the '74 and '75 Stanley Cups. I loved that physical style of hockey. I can still hear in my head to this day, Gene Hart calling the final seconds of game 6. "Orr shoots it down the ice. Parent makes the save. Ladies and Gentlemen, the Flyers are going to win the Stanley Cup! The Flyers win the Stanley Cup! The Flyers win the Stanley Cup! The Flyers have won the Stanley Cup!" Just like it happened yesterday.

I foundly remember the Jan '76 game when the Flyers played the Russian Red Army Team. The Russians had beaten every NHL team they had played, until Montreal was finally able to skate to a tie. The Flyers where the last game in the series. Due to the "Broad Street Bullies" physical play, the Russians walked off the ice. After being told that they would not be paid if they didn't finish the game, they finally came back to the ice and lost 4-1. What a great game.

Parent was originally Bruins property, I believe he went in the expansion draft (six teams at once I think).
Bruins enforcer when I started following early 60's was Teddy Green...and even after Orr came up and they won the Cup, they may have scored a ton but were still very physical.

I dunno, a few other changes like eliminating the two-line offside geared toward higher scoring games just cheapened a pure sport for me.

And after all that, they still have the worst national TV deals and are still #4 of the four major league sports.

College hockey is pretty cool.

Since half of the team is made up of former Rangers, give me Tampa Bay. This will also give me double the joy of knocking out the Devils.

Simple.

If the Penguins win, super premium = MOWs, Diesels, 5 Vegas, etc.

If the Flyers win, super premium = Tats, MF, Fuente, etc.
