On the same day Justice Kennedy announced his retirement from the Supreme Court this otherwise page one court decision was made by 5-4 conservative majority.

They overturned a 40 year old ruling that required government workers to pay union dues even if they weren't union members.

Net effect: unions, nationally, are going to lose revenue and bargaining clout.

Trump said he actually wet himself he was so happy.
He actually said "Big loss for the coffers of the Democrats!"

(Trump's belligerence and blatant divisiveness is damaging our country, getting old, and just plain stupid already. But I digress..)

"Wednesday’s ruling overruled the court’s 1977 decision in Abood v. Detroit Board of Education, which had made a distinction between two kinds of compelled payments. Forcing nonmembers to pay for a union’s political activities violated the First Amendment, the court said. But it was constitutional, the court added, to require nonmembers to help pay for the union’s collective bargaining efforts to prevent freeloading and ensure “labor peace.”

Overturned, despite the fact that monies slated for political candidates was always refunded to non-members.

F@ck unions. They only protect the weak and lazy.

The dues go to political parties (mainly the DNC!) and if you're opposed...you're screwed.

They've been going downhill because they're bloated and top heavy management has become what they sought to dispose of from the beginning! What a joke. Their time is over. Had a good run, thanks for getting some things done for the middle class, but now you're just thieves.

Union Experience

AFP, a French corporation doing food production in the central valley... i was working in the laboratory... lab techs got slammed with testing, we were running behind and the water dispenser we used for testing ran out of water, so our manager grabbed a bottle real quick and replaced it...

The lazy sacks of crap that had been hiding behind the union instead of standing behind the work they did, immediately stopped working and reported the manager for taking work away from union members...

He was fined $500 And had to take a training course on union work... and of course, production had to stop because the lab workers had stopped so nothing was being cleared and the warehouse was backing up with held product...

A little while later two union reps pulled me aside and let me know that union members did not chat with management...if a discussion was taking place with management my union rep needed to be present.
Later,at a holiday get together my family friend told me he got called into a meeting with the union and other upper management people and was reprimanded and given a written warning for fraternizing with a union member with no union representation present...it was BS,work was not mentioned once in our chat...

I lasted another 8-9 months and quit....pay was great, but it's harder to find ways to f*ck off than it is to actually do the work they're paying you to do

My union experience. An old job of mine payed $28 bucks an hour almost 20 years ago, and present day the same job pays $12 bucks an hour without the union. I can assure you that none of the guys who worked there with me were weak or lazy. In regards to politics, I don't think corporations or unions should be donating. However, if one side gets to donate then I don't see the problem with the other getting to donate as well.

Edit: I also don't have a problem with the recent SCOTUS ruling.

Sounds like whatever job you were doing is worth 12 bucks an hour and the union was keeping that wage artificially inflated to a much higher wage... backdoor price fixing... nice...

(That's not to say your quality of work isn't worth a higher wage, just that the wage shouldn't be universally fixed for every tom, d*ck and Harry...)

Trade unions are a value to their respective fields.

All other unions suck.

They're thug wannabes and serve no useful purpose.

Yes. In one case decided by the Supreme Court, Communications Workers v. Beck, the union was found to be spending almost 80 percent of its dues money on matters unrelated to collective bargaining, such as campaign contributions. Under the law, if workers who are not union members object to the use of their money for things that are not directly related to collective bargaining, they are entitled to a refund of the portion of their dues spent on politics and other non-bargaining activities. When non-unionized workers have attempted to get their money back, they have usually met with opposition and stonewalling from union officials.

Wonder if government non-union members also have a hard time getting their money back.
Clearly partisan if they do.

Undermining unions is another part of the un-ending battle being waged, and being won, by the wealthy corporations over the average wage earner. Unless corporations evolve some standards for treating their average workers with respect and compassion (shares of company's profits, higher pay, better benefits), rather than as disposable products, the gap in income between the wealthiest and the average worker will expand. About a half century ago, the average CEO's salary was about 30 times that of the average worker. Now, it is almost 275 times the average worker's salary. This inequality in compensation tilting heavily in favor of the bosses will only get worse as unions continue getting busted...

There will no longer be a voice that represents labor, and that will lead to abuses of the workers...and the cycle will repeat...
