A key committee in the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives is moving to eliminate the God reference from the oath administered to witnesses testifying before the panel, as part of a new rules package expected to be approved this week, according to a draft obtained exclusively by Fox News.

The draft shows that the House Committee on Natural Resources would ask witnesses to recite only, "Do you solemnly swear or affirm, under penalty of law, that the testimony that you are about to give is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?"

The rules proposal places the words "so help you God" in red brackets, indicating they are slated to be cut.

Film at 11... 😟

I heard it will be replaced by 'On yo' Momma'... 😟

Where's the problem?

Reasonably meaningless phrase to an atheist. Why have it in there?

I think we're supposed to fear Pelosi more than God now... 😟

Atheists are reasonably meaningless to me.

yet under penalty of law is all that a witness has to fear, so feel free to believe in God, but at least get real.
Jail is more real to a potential perjurer, believer or not.

When was the last time God smote a perjurer?

Wasn't a smiting but he made Judas feel really really bad after that one dinner party

so, then, like after a Seder few years ago?

In our judicial system, it's nice to make believers who aren't involved in the system feel God's involvement, but the real deterrent is not smiting, it's jail.

I could easily live without the unnecessary and ineffective bows to religion in matters of government and justice.

It's symbolic, but does nothing...except alienate non believers born with the same rights. Dropping the phrase won't encourage believers to commit perjury, unless they are already religious hypocrites pretending they got an escape clause from honesty.

if any true believers find anything in the above to be insulting, I wish they'd read it slower. Your beliefs are not in question nor under attack.

I have taken oaths administered by government officials more than two dozen times and not once have I ever repeated, "So help me god"
Never made my commitment to service, truth or country any less than anyone else who ever swore the same oaths.
I had a conversation with a Commanding Officer almost 20 years ago prior to his administering the oath to me in front of a crowd. I let him know that my informed interpretation of the oath I was about to take left the last part as 'optional'. (I was always pretty confident in my position from a strictly legal position.) I asked him to consider not saying it, because I would not repeat it and leave him hanging. He was rather apoplectic and got in my face a bit. In the end, he didn't say it, but the pain on his face was visible. I can see now that it was a bit petty, because as Victor said, it would have meant nothing to me to just say it, but at the time, I thought it was principled and I needed to make a point.

Petty or not, I'd probably do it again, I'm afraid....I'll let you know
