I often have heard of "Barnyard" smell with maduro cigars in particular. I bought a bundle of cigars that I regularly buy and some of them have an overpowering taste and smell of manure. I am wondering if this is a stage of curing that they are going through and it will go away. The smell is so wretched that I can't smoke them in my cigar cave. I have to smoke them outside.

I don't know much, my guess would be that if you let them rest for a while that some of that scent will go away over time.

There's a barnyard smell of curing hay and freshly tilled dirt, and then there's horse manure.

Don't smoke horse chit.

Buy better cigars. Or maybe let those rest a year or two and try again. But if it's that pungent and unpleasant, I highly doubt there's gonna be any improvement.

I think the only cigar I've had that smelled of horse excrement was a rocky Patel cargo...

Gran Habano is pretty well known for the barnyard/mildewey basement smell...

Cargos were bad, but I don't remember that smell. Reminds me that I have a wet hay smelling PDR in the dry box that should be ready to smoke now if it will ever be.

Hey, how do you know what manure tastes like ?

Manure, barnyard earth in the cold draw or untoasted foot is common & can be very desirable in high ends. I've never gotten that fragrance after ignition. I've found manure on cold draw converts to pepper spice leather & blue cheese after lit. The only discount bundle I've ever bought was Padrons though so my experience with lower end bundles is nil.

Mrs.G. says all my cigars smell like excrement

That PDR I had dry boxed smelled OK and smoked OK.

The most intense barnyard smell I’ve ever gotten is with the (CC) Partagas Cazadores, when you open the foil envelope inside the box. It is rich, and to me anyway, wonderful!

If that’s the only thing you smell at first, that’s not a good sign. Plenty of cigars that I’ve smoked initially had that “rich” smell as one of several aromas and they never detracted from the overall smoke. IMO.

Gran Habano is the king of manure smell IMO and unlike a pleasant note like Fiddler mentioned the GH translates directly to a weird sourness when smoked.
