Vic, we can agree on a lot of what you mention. When the acts or omissions are egregious, the officer usually does get fired.

I'll give you an example of "hours". You're driving like an idiot... you get into an accident. They do a personnel investigation and you get hours. Example for me, personally... I was driving lawfully with 2 other people in the car... dog ran out in front of me, I hit it and it died. Personnel investigation was done and I was cleared of any wrongdoing.

Another example - an inmate was released late... like 30 days later than he should have been. I handled his grievance months before where he stated his release date on file was wrong. I took it to the business office and they calculated it and said it was right. It wasn't, but how the hell do I know that? I don't work that side and I don't deal with court paperwork, court minutes, and release date calculations. I was in the middle of that investigation, too... I was cleared, the 2 people who did the calculations got in trouble and lost money. Dude was paid $300 a day for every day we kept him over.

If you're in any investigation at all (in my previous dept) and you lie and it gets found out. You're fired. Gone. Goodbye.

I know not all dept's are like this, and some people are buddies with the sheriff, or his assistant, or the chief or whatever and stupid sh*t gets brushed under the rug... but not sh*t this bad.

2 cases in my dept where dudes should have got canned, but they got max hours and kept their jobs. 1 was a sgt paying a guy overtime to install electronics at his own house. The other was a young officer getting some on duty booty (consensual, but while he should have been answering calls for service).

I never turned anyone in to PSB (professional standards bureau), however, I stopped uses of force before they escalated and stepped in when necessary and reported it to MY supervisor. In some instances, yes... it went to a personnel investigation, and I don't feel one whit bad about it.

Personnel investigations can run from a written reprimand to hours to termination to criminal prosecution if warranted.

MACS, I think you may have a better understanding of this than most of us do. I am outraged every time I see murder. I am equally outraged when a cops life gets destroyed when their actions are justifiable. Any thoughts on how to fix all of this?

People have preconceived notions and then react when they've got one side of the story in a lot of cases. My usual gut reaction, of course, is to err on the side of the cop.

Not so, here... I said from the jump once the guy was cuffed he should have let him up. Most of my LE buddies are just as outraged as you right now. They're like... WTF!?

There are good cops and there are bad cops. Why didn't the other 3 get involved and make him get off the guy. It's sometimes hard to be a good cop.

Looks like Chauvin and Floyd were co-workers and might have known each other. Interesting twist.



George Floyd and now-former Officer Derek Chauvin both worked security at the El Nuevo Rodeo club on Lake Street, according to Maya Santamaria. Santamaria owned the building for nearly two decades, but sold the venue within the last few months.

"Chauvin was our off-duty police for almost the entirety of the 17 years that we were open," Santamaria said. "They were working together at the same time, it's just that Chauvin worked outside and the security guards were inside."

yeah I saw a short comment by her, don't recall who interviewed her but picked up on local news station.
She said she usually enjoyed working with him but there were issues when he over reacted..like when he peppered sprayed the entire crowd one time as she was thinking things weren't bad...
