So, going to make some tacos tonight. Need to get some lettuce. Run to the grocery store for some fixin's

Franking iceberg lettuce is $1.88 a head. And it's not like a large head of lettuce like we used to get, it's about the size of a babies head. Out of curiosity I weighed it... 0.48 lbs.

Do the math... nearly $4/lb for a baby head of plain Jane iceberg lettuce.

WTF?

Someone mentioned something here about a lettuce shortage. I didn't buy it because I'd just been to the store and there was lettuce aplenty. Then there wasn't. I haven't seen romaine hearts in like a week and a half now. Making do with the pre-chopped bagged version

Tacos? You can use thinly sliced cabbage. Especially if it's any kind of seafood taco. Wait, you hate seafood. You are making ground beaf in crunchy shell tacos, aren't you?

Any Iceberg lettuce is 90% water. So how much is it really costing?

So you hacked into my Google puck or was it just a wild guess? I do like fresh cabbage, never thought about it as a replacement for lettuce in a taco though.

Yeah, mostly water. I'd prefer Romain (which is mostly water too) but Romain lettuce was out of stock. Looked at the bagged chopped stuff but all they had was various salad mixes with cabbage, kale and shredded carrots and stuff... which is good for a salad but not the best alternative for tacos. I'd have eaten it on a taco but kids would probably balk at shredded lettuce, kale, spinach, carrots, red cabbage mix.

It's been $ 3.49 to $ 3.99 here if they have any and they are small heads. I bought one for $ 1.88 in Maine at Wallyworld and brought it home - large head good quality. Had tacos last night.

You can always get that sliced cabbage mix and quick pickle it.

I got a big box of 50/50 mixed greens and spinach for $3.99 the other day.

Try cilantro on your tacos instead of lettuce and thank me later. Usually around $1 per bunch.

Try using bacon as a substitute for a similar crunch, hope this helps.

I like these ideas. Prolly use the cilantro and onion thing with the leftover meat for a lunch this week. Previously made stuff for tacos make for an easy work lunch.

Small tuperware thing of taco meat, sandwich baggies of cheese, another with lettuce (now thinking of onion and cilantro), couple of soft tortillas. Nuke the meat for about 30 sec. Spritz the soft shell with some water and nuke it for about 30 seconds. Then put it all together adding salsa and/or some dabs of hot sauce. Sriracha (**** sauce) is a good staple to have on hand for just about anything

The bacon thing bit more time consuming. Maybe cut it up into chunks and fry it up with the meat. Then again bacon with taco seasoning would kind of ruin the bacon. I'd guess for best results would be to fry the bacon separately from the meat/taco seasoning mix and add the crumbles while building the taco.

Maybe the new normal for lettuce prices this time of year. Most of the winter lettuce is grown around Yuma Az and they are getting less water from the Colorado due to drought. Prolly reduced acreage planted now or a switch to a less water intensive crop?
