In college for one of my liberal arts literature classes we had to read a bunch of articles from different perspectives on different topics and do a report on it. One article that made an impression on me discussed the use of profanity in literature. Simple 4 letter words can be powerful to impart emotion and/or emphasis.

For example: What the heck! vs What the F#ck! Both say the same thing but using the word f#ck passes on stronger emotions from the writer to the reader.

I was a pretty interesting class.
