We have a Phillips ARD, no occasion to use it though, thank goodness.

I know an EMT trainer and asked about some training, he says hook it up and follow the directions, it will not shock unless necessary.

From what I was trained... if the heart stops, #1 priority to keep the blood moving - chest compressions to the tune of the Bee Gee's song "Staying Alive."

Now days they don't recommend mouth to mouth for CPR. Typically there is enough oxygen in the blood for the time being and ya just gotta keeping the blood flowing to brain and other vital organs.

AED devices, once the sticky pads are in place, are able to do some sort of diagnostic to determine if a shock is needed. The machine talks to you and guides you. If it determines that it needs to fire, hands off and don't touch the patient. Shock happens... then back to chest compressions if needed.

Then the machine will monitor for a couple of minutes and if needed will tell you to back off/hands off for another shock.

Second verse same as the first... continue until professional help arrives.

Every other place I worked at had an AED or two mounted on a wall somewhere near an emergency kit like in the lunch room, front desk, some place easily accessible and with signs and stuff... like trying to locate a fire extinguisher. I find it odd that Wally World, at least the store I'm killing time in, has no AED's.

I would think that any business with X number of employees or any grocery store, public building, schools, etc would be required to have one which is periodically checked similar to fire extinguishers other safety checks.

They don't even have stashed one in back where the kids can't fool with them? I would think OSHA would insist.

The instructor did reference the song for life saving beats, but the AEDs we have will literally say "press, press, press..." It's like Twiki from Buck Rogers is your personal cheerleader

Imma could use more coffee instead of an AED this morning. Out and about for a quick 5. I have no idea what "in the zone" on your fit bit really means. I walk almost as fast as a slow jog but doubt my heart rate gets much above 100 unless I'm climbing a grade.

anyone ever used an AED machine?

Yes.

I shocked two people last night. Not with an automated one, a real one. But I've used an aed twice in public.

Had AED's in a few places in the jail. Was taught how to use them, but as some stated, it is pretty self explanatory.

Yes, in a time of life or death, discretion takes a back seat. Remove any over the shoulder boulder holders especially if they have under wire thingies. If they need to be shocked or chest pumped... do what is needed.

Then leave a Drafter calling card behind and maybe give one to the EMT folks, they will probably need it for their report anyway.

Me, too... and no, it doesn't count. But I would prefer the tazer to the pepper spray. Pain is gone in 5-8 seconds. Pepper spray sticks around for hours. 🤦

Remember the first shower you took after your pepper spray training. You know, the shower 4 hours later where all the pepper spray in your hair came out and ran right back into your eyes??!!

FFS that sucked.

OK, though. I am glad I have never used (or had one used on me) an AED...

I had to do the pepper spray BS in the Navy... then again with the Sheriff's dept. Me saying I had already been through it wasn't enough. 😣

And yeah... that second activation is a mofo.
