Yep. I watch him while he's playing. And dogs all speak the same language. I know when he's having fun and when his boundaries get crossed. I also watch to be sure he is respecting boundaries.

He's no saint. He sometimes gets douchey and I have to set him straight, but when you keep tabs it prevents a lot of BS.

I read a book called "How to speak dog" by Stanley Coren. It has been fascinating to watch dogs interact after reading that book. And very helpful in reading Tank's behavior.

Talking about 🐶 dogs, was sitting on the patio puffing a ceegar and I watch the peeps dog across the street wandering around the next door neighbors yard and heads down the sidewalk and then walks into the road, basturds blowing their horn at him. Basturds so I ran over and got him back in his house and altered the owners. My good deed for today.

100% this. Cesar Milan's book (he's got a bunch) titled Cesar's Way was the most helpful book of all the books I read. Little things we do as dog owners make a huge difference in the way our dogs view us.

He states that many issues dog owners face today with their dog's behavior is their own fault. Dogs are pack animals and they need structure and leadership. If you do not provide it, they will assume the lead role. It's in their nature.

Tank is 80% obedient. If I wanted to be a total screw, he would be 100%, but I allow him to be a dog and I give him some freedom to be himself. This way, I get a dog who listens... and a dog who will play with no reservations and be a complete goofball because he knows if he acts like a retard, pops will allow it... to a point.

He is not as obedient with my wife, though he does listen to her, begrudgingly. I forgot something when we left the house this morning for our walk. We were about a block away, so I turned over the leash and ran back to the house. Tank continued the walk with my wife, but she said he kept turning back for me, and at another block away just sat and refused to move until I got back.

I'm sure many of you are tired of hearing me go on and on about the dog and the relationship we've developed. I completely understand that. I've always loved dogs, and they've always tolerated me. When I was finally able to devote my time to a dog of my own... I geeked out.

I geeked out hard. But I think that because I have devoted so much time reading and learning about the relationship we have with dogs, Tank is better off. And so am I.

I feel for you Rambo. Tank is only 3 years old. Supposedly American bully breed is a 10-13 year life span. When he goes... I'm gonna be a hot fkn mess.

This guy has taken over my heart. 😍

As was I, still think of Pepper every day. The day we got her at the SPCA she was in a cage looked like a rag mop, took her out and fell in love with her. Wife said can't put her back now. We learned that she was going to be put down that evening. So that faithful Saturday in 1979 was a blessing for the both of us. Should be noted after a trip to the groomer, I taught she gave us back the wrong dog.LOL
Enjoy your time with Tank.

That is the downside of pets, dogs in particular. Buffllo went to dog heaven back in 1978, still puts grit in my eyes and reminds me of a Will Rogers quote:

“If there are no dogs in Heaven, then when I die I want to go where they went.”

I’ve learned that when a beloved pet passes, you get another one. My wife “ wasn’t ready “ for 3 years when our first dog died after 15 years...I understood. We got another one that we had for 10 years. Two weeks after I helped her to the rainbow bridge....I got another rescue pup.... best thing evah!!

On a serious note, miss my dog every day.
Nothing like a bond between a man and his canine companion.

Looking forward my next buddy.
He’ll be hiking, climbing and camping with me in the wilderness…

All of the furry animals that I've owned have come from the animal shelters. I miss both my dog, Madison, and a few cats that I've shared a house with the many years. Many people don't like cats but those that I've had were pretty sociable except for Eno. She was a true scaredy cat. Any commotion and she'd hide. But when things quieted down, would come out of her shell. She had double paws (or "mitten" paws) on both front feet.

Had my dog before I had kids, we got him from a shelter when he was just a pup. 5 yrs later we started having kids. Madison, the dog, was a mutt and great family member. When the kids were born and not even out of the hospital yet, the nurses told us to bring home a few of the baby blankets, infant clothes, anything that has the baby's smell on it from the hospital and let the dog sniff them so he knows there's a new member coming home. Upon arrival of getting home and released from the hospital he was curious... He sniffed them out - yep I know that smell.. Welcome home. He was not an intimidating dog, probably 45 lbs. Collie, yellow lab, and whatever mutt mix but he definitely had the pack mentality. When the kids were infants and crying and stuff he didn't like it. He'd would either leave the room or try to lick them to calm them down.

When the kids were toddlers and playing in the back yard, he was outside with them and on point. A neighbor had two rambunctious Portuguese Water Dogs. Neighbors would just open the sliders from the deck and let them run around the neighborhood. If they came into our yard, Madison would cut them off and shoo them away from the kids. When we went for a walk, the kids wanted to hold the leach. Any slight tug on the leash, he'd sit until the slack was taken up (could have easily pulled and dragged the kids down) but he knew the kids were at the other end of the leash so would just sit looking over his shoulder.

At night, as everyone was turning in, daughter in her crib, son in his toddler bed, he'd lay down on the floor of the hallway at the top of the stairs in front of the doors to the kid's bedrooms until they went to sleep. Then, and only then, he'd curl up into his bed in our bed room. Sometimes he'd drag his bed into hall in front of the kids rooms.

I'm not even sure if he knew he was a dog. Did we adopt him or did he adopt us?
