State Attorney General Letitia James said Wednesday she filed a lawsuit against PepsiCo, alleging the Westchester-based food and beverage conglomerate is continuing to pollute the environment through its use of plastic bottles and food wrappers.
Specifically the suit alleges PepsiCo contributed significantly to high levels of plastic pollution along the Buffalo River in Erie County, “contaminating drinking water and harming wildlife.” James also alleges it failed to warn consumers about the potential health and environmental risks of its single-use plastic packaging, and misleads consumers and the public about its efforts to combat plastic pollution.
“No company is too big to ensure that their products do not damage our environment and public health. All New Yorkers have a basic right to clean water, yet PepsiCo’s irresponsible packaging and marketing endanger Buffalo’s water supply, environment, and public health,” James said in a statement announcing the lawsuit filed in state Supreme Court in Erie County
