Good QBs always have notable receivers because they make them shine. When ppl say Montana wouldn't have been as good without Rice, I say Rice wouldn't have been as good without Montana. Them together was a dream team but a superstar QB can get any receiver who doesn't have the dropsies receptions and yardage.

BZZZZZZT... Steve Young. Rich Gannon. Jerry Rice was just a freak. He had more TD's with Young.

I give you Lynn Swan and John Stallworth... made Terry Bradshaw look better than he was. Dude has a career 52% completion rating and 212 TD's to 210 INT's.

[quote=MACS]So I keep hearing this talked about by the "sports commentators" that Brock Purdy is a "system quarterback". They say he just distributes the ball to Christain McCaffery, Deebo Samuel, George Kittle and Brandon Aiyuk...

So then, what the f--k was Joe Montana? He had Roger Craig, Tom Rathman, Brent Jones, John Taylor, Jerry Rice... arguably a much better O-line.. and that defense was killer.

Give the kid the respect he's due for f--k's sake. Anybody gonna tell me Joe's teammates were NOT better than what Purdy has??[/quote

49'er hater here...mostly because Joe Montana kept eating the Rams' lunch back in the 80's when the Rams had an historically good team...this after the Rams owned the 49'ers in the 70s...then along came Joe...

in those days, the QB called the plays...Joe didn't execute a system, so to speak...the number of times Joe beat the Rams with his head, arm or his feet at crunch time and his playoff record has convinced me he's the best QB ever...

Bart Starr is on the list of best QBs ever. I woud say #1. He played in an era where passing took 2nd fiddle to the run so his passing yards and stuff don't look good vs 80's,90's, 2000's QB's He played in an era that didn't protect the QBs and receivers like they do in the modern era..

He essentially was the offense coordinator and called the plays in the huddle. He played in 10 postseason games and the Packers won nine of them winning with 5 NFL Championships with him under center. QB passer rating of 105 in the post season puts him as #2 behind Mahomes. Montana is #11, Brady is #20, Young #29. (I wouldn't call Mahomes as a best QB ever).

If you want to use those numbers, Starr is an order of magnitude better than Montana, Brady, and Young.

Hold on young fella! ✋ Stats don’t tell you the whole story.

Terry had a cannon for an arm and although the Steelers had two great RBs during their dynasty run, they still would take deep shots. Fo’ sure Terry could spin it and loved to throw it long. And, being a bit of a gunslinger, probably threw it when he shouldn’t have.

Another thing to note is that the no-contact rule past 5 yards wasn’t put in till 1978 so receivers could be continually mugged until the ball was in the air. Consequently, less completions and more interceptions were the norm. QBs hitting on 55%, let alone 60% of their passes was the exception, not the rule. Bradshaw played 8 out of his 14 years prior to the rule change so his TD-to-INT ratio reflects that.

So, looking at Terry’s career, NFL regular season MVP, 4 Super Bowl appearances, 4 Super Bowl wins, back-to-back Super Bowl MVPs, I’d say he had a pretty good career. In fact, if you dig deeper into his career win-loss stats, both regular season and playoffs, they’re similar to Montana’s!

Btw, I’mma so franking old that I saw Lynn Swann play in a California vs. Hawaii high school all-star game in 1970 and lemme tell you, it didn’t take too long to realize that Swann was a very special player. Iirc, he returned a punt for a TD and had unmatched speed.

The Chiefs should also acknowledge it was an illegal formation….the RG was way too far back as well. Just saw a pic.

Purdy is a great QB, you can’t call a QB that is able to throw anticipating a spot as a system QB. Windows are tight in the NFL, accuracy and anticipation are key, and it’s not common to get that paired with the ability to read a defense and have enough athleticism to present an issue for the defenses.

Watched the new documentary, “Bart Starr: America’s Quarterback” on the SEC Network. I was a big fan of his while growing up but still learned or was reminded of a few personal things today.

I can’t tell if Detroit’s defense has recovered from the trashing the Bears gave them, or is the Broncos offense still terrible.

Denver offense needs to get light it up. They need 3 TDs in one quarter. Prolly not gonna happen.

Just turned on the Cowboys @ Bills.

Cowboys losing? Got myself a nice cup of hot chocolate, going to snuggle up on the couch and enjoy the warm, holiday feeling.
