No candidate has shown any sincere inclination whatsoever to tackle the skyrocketing national debt. By this time tomorrow the national debt will have increased by $30+ billion dollars. Tomorrow a little bit more since interest is being capitalized. Presidential inability to submit a balanced budget which includes debt reduction and the rabid desire shared by every member of every member of Congress to send bacon to their states and individual districts is driving us towards disaster.
Members of both parties be it past Presidents, Congressional leaders and rank and file members of Congress blame each other. But, all one has to do is go back year by year and count the number of times in the past 50 years a fiscal year ended with a budget surplus and it’s easy to see that the debt increased regardless of which party controlled the White House, the Senate, the House or any combination thereof.
Both parties as well as their supporters blame each the other. But, neither the Republicans nor the Democrats have shown themselves to be fiscally conservative. The largest increase in the was over national debt under Trump climbed nearly $8.2T. That was the single largest increase during any administration both as a percentage as well as actual amount.
Can we lay that blame 100% at Trump’s feet? The answer is no. By law the President submits a budget. One would hope it would be one where revenue exceeds expenses and that shroud is used to reduce principal on the next. But that hasn’t happened in years.
Congress should then review and either passes it unchanged or not. Then send the budget bill back to the President to sign. Problem is Congress also lacks intestinal fortitude. Instead of reviewing a budget proposal and making trimming where needed to ensure a surplus that can be used to reduce principal on the debt they punt and continue to pass one continuing resolution after another which basically means day to day spending remains unchanged year after year.
Hence the dog and pony show continues obstructing our view of the ever approaching cliff. It’s beyond foolish to capitalize daily operating expenses under the false pretense that eventually a mythical David Copperfield will appear, reach into his hat and pull out a paid off debt.
Since that dog won’t hunt someone needs to step up to the plate and campaign on being willing to be brave enough to make broad across the board expenditure cuts then use the bully pulpit to call out members of both parties from the leadership down to the most junior member for the charlatans the are and daily remind them in front of the nation to do their job.
Show me someone with that sort of character and I’ll support them. Until then as far as I’m concerned everyone running is but another flea on the back of a mangy dog.
