Chores are done. Kitty litterbox changed, trash at the street, chickens fed and watered.

Back when I first got chickens we had one named Roast who was the sweetest little chicken ever. She would come running whenever we went outside and would crouch down with her wings out begging to be carried. I'd put her on my lap while I rode around on the mower and she was as happy as can be. This was before we had them fenced in (because of Roast - she kept trying to greet the neighbors when they came out) and there were some days I'd come home from work and she'd run around to the front of the house to greet me too. She got sick pretty young and I had to shoot her. Never had another one like that.

We got another one now. Her name's Bean. Has been gradually getting friendlier and friendlier, she's about 2 years old now. I went out back to feed and water them and when I opened the coop door on the back, she came in through the front, ran through the coop and squatted down with her wings out for me to hold her. Picked her up, scratching her chin she leans into it and makes happy chicken noises like when you hit that spot on a dog they just can't itch. She's been doing that for a few months now. So silly and adorable.

Gotta put the little dog down before we go on vacation. Demented, chits n pisses wherever she is when the urge strikes, often after she's been running around outside, comes in and chits on the floor. Gets startled easily and responds by biting whomever or whatever is nearby. Gets lost inside the house too, looking around and wandering all the rooms even though they both were trained to go downstairs, kitchen, living room only. No dogs in the hallway.

Anyway, called the vet we've used and they won't do it because I didn't bring her in for annual visits. Called another they said we're not taking new patients. I said no, I just want her euthanized. Lady says that's a new patient visit. Called another and they said I'll have to bring her in for a health assessment first. Called humane society, they said they don't do that anymore. Called the emergency vet clinic and asked them for a referral to anywhere that can do it. There's a walk in clinic that does it for $50 no appointments. I was about to grab a shovel and start digging.

I appreciate all the kind sentiments, gentlemen. My sister (our family) is truly blessed to have the exceptional caregivers at the senior living facility she has been staying for the past year. They are caring and very compassionate people, who treat my sister and us like family. Although the hospice staff is good, the facility's 2 primary caregivers make a huge difference 24/7.

The facility is limited to 6 residents, so they have time to form definite bonds. We've seen two of her housemates pass this year and it was obvious that the caregivers were as emotionally upset as the family members. So danm is absolutely right, this is much better than dying in an ICU. They take pride in helping their residents extend their lives

I told the owner of the house, who is just as dedicated as her caregivers, that when it is my time to go, I want to die at her place. I think she took that as the compliment I intended.

Hospice is apparently a rewarding career. Think it would just gut me. My cousin's wife has worked in hospice for 20+ years, She was helpful with sharing behaviors and time lines as my dad's health decline and passing.

A soft, serene, hopeful sadness is always in her eyes.

Just got home from a discouraging visit with my older sister, who has inoperable brain cancer...she's been non-responsive for the past week to ten days....

her caretakers say she's barely sipping liquids...doctor has put her on morphine and discontinued all her other meds...she has hung on for weeks beyond predictions...hope she is not in any pain and the end is merciful...

Morning people. Last day for the painters so I can enjoy my own patio in this great weather.

Don't forget something nice for your valentine iffn ya want to avoid the dog house. Thirty-three years ago on this date I proposed to Spunky at the top of Camelback mountain and then promptly left town for a fishing trip to Mexico. That has become a running joke with my extended family. Any time anybody does something they might regret we say "head to Mexico!". 🤣

For a dog I didn't particularly like, that was hard to put her down.

But it had to happen before we leave, can't ask someone to watch a dog that's not housebroken and attacks anything that startles her.

She was happy as a clam at the clinic though wagging her tail getting petted till the end.

Yep... when I put my cat down I thought the same thing... it's a cat. Meh.

Well yeah... cried like a little girl and ran out of the vet's office without paying. Had to go back in after I got the dust out of my eye, and stuff.
