If you have excessive algae and the tank doesn't receive sunlight you're nitrates or nitrites are too high. The only way to bring them down is to do larger and/or more frequent water changes. Also, adding algae removal chemicals is a bad idea so I wouldn't do that. They may solve the problem but they create others.

I don't add anything to my tank except a dechlorinator (Seachem Prime) in water change water that I let sit for a couple days for the chlorine to evaporate anyway. But the Prime which is superior and ironically cheaper than Tetra or Wardley has additional benefits. It neutralizes nitrates and nitrites for 24 hrs, so it's like your fish are swimming in 100% fresh water for a day. It neutralizes any present heavy metals like copper if u have copper pipes on your house, and instead of adding a fake, synthetic layer of protective slime coating on the fish like the other stuff does which makes the entire tank slimy, instead it promotes the growth of natural slime coating on the fish. I highly recommend it, you can find it on the rainforest site. You only use 1/10 of what the others call for so get a small bottle. A $4.50 100ml bottle treats 1000 gallons.

No direct sunlight, but very bright , adjustable LED set-up. Nitrites and nitrates are perfect. It's just algae from the break-in cycle.

It only takes a few minutes for a five gallon bucket of water with de-chlorinator to be safe for your tank. Have to be careful not to overuse most de-chlorinators. That will kill your fish. The one I use, API Stress Coat+, cannot, practically, be overused.

No other issues except the phosphate I found in our tap water.

Tanks cleaned, water changed.

Fenster,

Last week my FX4 stopped working. It wasn't clogged up or due for a cleaning.

Took it apart, checked everything. Cleaned it anyway. Changed impeller.

Waited an hour, still didn't purge or run.

Did you know that you can buy a new motor for the FX series (2,4 &6)?

Ordered a new motor from Fluval for $93.00 shipped.

Went outside did a couple hours of work, when I went back in the house the pump ran perfectly fine.

I have no idea why?????

So now I have an FX4 with all the filters, an extra impeller AND an extra motor. Lol Idk...

maybe you just had a bad motor that finally stopped working intermittently?

I have an FX6, which is pretty much the same thing as you have. Just a different pump- I think. It automatically cycles every 12 hours and whenever the sensors indicate there is too much air in the filter so it can purge the air upon auto re-start (2 minutes???).

Is your intake lines(s) connection above water level such that the filter could be sucking in small amounts of air that build up inside the filter causing it to automatically stop to purge the air? Is your intake hose connection to the filter airtight? Is the lid on the filter really tightened up?

I spent 2 hours cleaning my tank, filter, media, etc., yesterday. Had the same problem with the filter until it fully purged itself of air...

Beyond that, I cannot think of anything else...

Everything is running fine now.

I just checked all the things you mentioned. Good to go.

As far as having a bad motor, it was the first time it just cut off on me in the 7 months I've owned it. Lady before me said she bought it new and ran it everyday for 2 years.

I'm not sure how long the motors are supposed to last. Any idea?

Takes me about an hour to clean both of my tanks when I don't have to mess with that FX4.

How often do you clean your FX6? I only have to clean mine every 3 months. I think that's in line with the Fluval maintenance schedule.

I have a 60 gallon breeder-size (36 x 18" footprint) with 60-70 lbs. pounds of rocks so it probably holds like 55 gallons of water. FX6 is much bigger than usual for my size tank, but I always go long and buy the next size up because it gives me more water turnover. At 900 gallons per hour, the tank water is running through the filter and being turned over something like 16x per hour! As a result of this "over filtration", I could easily go 4-6 months, but I spend too much time looking at my tank and like when everything looks real good so I do it as needed- probably every four to six weeks. That schedule usually helps with breeding too.

My Neolamprologus Pulcher Daffodil (Daffodil Cichlid from Lake Tanganyika) had about 12-15 babies!!!

This species will, as a cohesive group (five fish), guard and grow-out territory for the mated pair and their offspring- for successive generations. And, they don't eat their own.

Could even have a second spawn and hatch-out in another month or two.

Never expected to accomplish in less than six months and starting out with juvenile fish that haven't grown out yet!

Here is an internet phot of the parents:

I clean my filter every 30-90 days because I am working on breeding and the fish respond really well to clean water. Also makes the tank look much better.

7-8 gallons of water change per week. Easy-peasy. Recommended turnover filter rate is 4x/hr. My water turns over 11x/hr. 🌫

We have a lot of phosphate in our tap water. Started using some media that eliminates phosphate. Also use some charcoal. No more algae!. Water is crystal clear. I'll change it out as soon as my phosphate reading increases or it doesn't look as good as I want it to.

This is a major hobby for me. Give me a call if ...you ever want to talk about aquariums

Yeah. I have 50 fish in my 75 gal, but they're small cichlids, assorted tetras and cory catfish.

I can go the 90 days in between filter cleanings without any problem. Cleaned the FX4 at the end of June and the filters weren't really that dirty. I might be able to go 6 months between cleanings if I wanted.

I change 20 gallons of water every 7 to 10 days.

Use a Fluval charcoal pad at the very bottom of the FX4, is that what you did?

It's a fun hobby for me too. I would say I'm into it way more between November and March. Some days during the lawn and garden season I don't even have time to watch them eat much less watch them swim around for any length of time.

My phone service here is chitty. I have an old flip phone (Yeah I outlasted Frankie T) and it wont make calls unless I'm either up on the mountain or at the very western end of the yard. I shoulda told you that when you sent me that PM a month or so ago.

I can text if I stand beside a window but that's it. The forum, with it's PM's, or email is pretty much the same as texting.
If people want to get ahold of me they either email or text. Wife's phone does work here. It's able to connect to our internet and work that way. So we do have a phone, all the way out here, for emergencies.

RobertHively wrote:

No. That doesn't even come close- compared to using loose aggregate carbon in a media bag-in terms of: effectiveness and cost.

I put in 2 cups of carbon into a media bag (looks like nylons). The bag sits in the bottom tray along with another bag containing 1/3 cup of phosphate remover. The carbon jar was $10-15, and probably will proved enough for three more filter cleanouts for the rest of a year. Much clearer water. Much better results. Much cheaper!

Based on a Fluvial carbon pad's weight- it has no more than 1/3 to 1/4 cup of carbon. That's like 8x more carbon than you are using. I have done this for every aquarium (marine and freshwater) for decades.

Thanks for the info.

I'd like to try that on my FX4 one day. Never hurts to have more carbon filtration.

Both of you guys are very generous though, and I appreciate you guys thinking of me.

They just revealed a new spawn of babies, about 15, which are co-mingling with the first spawn's remaining six little ones.
the six from the first spawn do not eat the successive spawn (brothers and sisters, so to speak). I suspected this could possibly happen and have been checking the moon phases. Only like 30 or so days.

This is just fckuing awesome to me!!!

Will post a link to a photo over the next few days...

My Bluegill died. It was only 2.5 yrs old. I tried to nurse him back to health for quite a while. So that left my 10 yr old silver dollar alone in the 30 gallon tank. I think it's immortal.

So I remade the 30 gallon. Threw some differnt plants in there and added a nice piece of driftwood. Added 8 Serpae Tetras and 3 Bronze Cory Catfish. They get along fine with the silver dollar.

Also bought some Cardinal Tetras and Blue Emperor Tetras for the 75 gallon tank. If the Silver dollar ever dies I plan on moving the Serpaes to the 75 gal and starting a Rasbora tank in the 30 gal. I plan to get a bunch of Harlequin Rasboras and maybe some Strawberry or Chili Rasboras.

Then I'll have two region specific tanks. 75 gal South American tank and a 30 gal southeast Asia tank...

At least 10 of the babies from the last spawn are alive and eating very well!

Heavy water changez induce breeding. So, I changed out 50% two weeks in a row.
Hoping my NL. Lelupi spawn as I already have a definite pair that is staking out their territory and behaving like they are ready to go.
See: https://www.fmueller.com/home/aquaristic/240g/fish/leleupi/

Did a 90-day cleanout of the entire canister filter that is the approximate size of a five-gallon bucket.

All is well in there...
