Calling the corn done. 913 ears for 2024. Many of the ears in this last walk through were small, eaten up by bugs or were of lower quality overall.

I'm going to weedeat, then mow 50% of the 1,750 sq ft corn plot. After that I'll plow it and put in some fall vegetables. We are going to plant broccoli, cabbage and carrots. Any other suggestions?

Thought about winter squash? Acorn, Butternut, Delicata? They store for quite a long time after harvest and they can be made into soup and canned, especially the Butternut. They are very good roasted as well.

Do you enjoy Lima beans? I think you can still get a crop in before frost , but I think a light frost doesn’t kill them.

Might be too early to plant spinach and romaine but those are usually pretty easy IMHO. The spinach can be blanched and frozen.

Best of luck with your fall garden.

The corn stalks are gone. Mowed them down with my brushcutter this evening.

Here's what we're planning for the 1,750 sq ft space:

50% Corn. Early Sunglow 63 days til harvest (600 seeds)

50% Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, carrots, sugar snap peas, eggplant, 2nd round of lettuce later on. Most of these are the "early" varieties.

Jeebs, wanted to get that Delicata squash but Burpee was sold out. It looks great. We already have quite a bit of Butternut squash and some Acorn too, so I think we're going to hold off on that.

Jake, on the corn, do I still need to start it with a triple 16 and then add the nitro when they are about 6 to 8 inches tall? The corn I'm going to try to grow only reaches a max height of around 4 ft.

Going to try to get it put in by August 1st, but that all depends when we receive the seeds and the weather...

Right on, Robert. I bet you’re going to have a bountiful harvest.

This is the biggest and best tasting watermelon that we've ever grown.

Wife ate some, I ate a lot, but we hardly made a dent in it...

Robert I’d do the same process. At worst there will be a little residual. In theory your corn should have used most of what you put out

How’s your season coming along, Jake? Had any time for a glass of wine with your cigars? Or just busy?

Ok I'm only going to use half of the 30-0-4 I used the first round of corn, bc I'm only planting 1/2 the amount of corn this time. But I will use the same amount of triple 19 throughout the entire garden. Thanks, Jake.

I got the 1,750 sq ft garden mowed yesterday, and this evening I trimmed the fence line.

Everything is prepared to plow. Gonna try and get the fertilizer that I need tomorrow.

I'll plow and plant when the seeds I ordered from Burpee get here--still hoping to get it in by August 1st.

Over and out.

Went to Southern States, got 50 lbs of triple 19. They didn't have any 32 or 34 nitro, but they did have 46-0-0 urea. I thought, why not? I didn't want to drive to Walmart and I could figure out the dose that I needed when I got home. Told the guy in the warehouse that I wanted 50 lbs of that too. Went inside to pay.

Cashier lady tells me that in order for me to buy the urea she needs my name, address and for me to set up an account with the government, I mean store. Yeah, the store. I told her I just use hunnerd dolla bills. She said she's the same way and that this is a new gubment rule. Guess they're afraid of people making homemade bombs wif all that nitro?? Why now?

Went to Wally World, got 14 lbs of 30-0-4 for this fall and a 33 lb bag for next season--in case 30-0-4 turf builder becomes scary to da gubment by next spring.

Side note: Southern States had a 75% off sale on seeds. I bought a lot. They didn't have tomato seeds though. Got 3 lbs of West Virginia and Volunteer (Tennessee) half runners, 1.5 lbs of Peaches and Cream corn, 0.5 lbs of Sunglow corn (wish I woulda gotten more), carrots, squash, lots of lettuce packets for my wife. Just a lot of stuff... 59 bucks. Couldn't believe what I got for that... If I woulda had more money with me I woulda purchased more. Thinking about going back some time this week.

The Burpee order will be here tomorrow, so were good on seeds for the fall garden even if I don't make it back to Southern States. Hope to plow & fertilize tomorrow evening, then plant August 1st.

Wife picked a bunch of tomatoes, cored them, and froze them. We're up to 7 gallons frozen at the moment. She said she's going to make a huge batch of tomato sauce after she gets a couple more gallons worth. She picked a lot of other stuff too. I forget what. It's all starting to blur together. I know she picked cucumbers though, bc she canned them...

That's the garden report.

Got the Burpee order delivered.

Garden plowed, debris raked & removed; 20 pounds of triple 19 applied. Tired.

We'll plant tomorrow evening.

We got the corn in--600 seeds. 63 days would put us at October 3rd for harvest.

We'll work on the rest of the stuff tomorrow. Been a busy week.

That's the garden report.

I went to their website and read the bio. Good American story...4th generation family farm.

Also checked out their produce chart and they grow corn up until October...that far north.

That's what we're trying to do here on a much smaller scale. It's a lot of work taking out the old corn stalks and prepping the entire garden again--and we only planted 600 seeds this time, about half of our spring planting.

I plan on making a 4,500 sq foot garden this winter. It will be roughly the size of both of our current gardens combined. We have really good soil here and I think the land should be used, not just mowed. With that addition it would put us up to 9,100 sq ft with deer proof 8 ft tall fence...

P.S. I see what you did there 🙂

Watered the gardens for an hour and a half. No significant rain in sight for our area, so it's back to watering every other day. All the previous rain, from the last week or so, has filled the creek back up; it's flowing much better than it was...

Got tiny little corn plants. Took 6 days to germinate. Kinda wish we woulda planted 1,000 instead of 600. Since we're growing less than half of what we did in the spring, we placed them 12 inches apart this time, instead of 7. The 12 inch spacing will make it much easier to weed the plot. I'll post a picture of their progress when they get 6 to 8 inches in height. At that time I'll apply the nitro per Jake's instructions.

In other garden news, wife now has 21 gallon bags of cored and frozen tomatoes. She said she'll have to start making tomato sauce soon because the deep freeze won't hold many more. I keep bringing them in, grocery bags full, at least every other day.

https://www.smartgardener.com/plants/107-tomato-tangerine/overview

Getting a decent amount of peppers. One of our 10 potato cylinders is ready to harvest. Second set of half runners are flowering. Have a third set of Roma bush beans planted in the corn plot.

That's the garden report.

Do you dry any of your peppers? I did that for a few years. Too easy and really adds a pop to home cooking.
