Got the 2nd set of corn put in.

We only had room for 800 seeds, thought it would be 1,000.

Either way we have corn planted 120 ft long and 30 ft wide, with proper spacing, minus a couple feet on each side as a buffer/walkway.

I let the tiller do the hard work today. If you turn the soil into powder, like Jake said, that seeder just glides across. We didn't have talc or graphite to put on the corn, so we used corn meal. It worked.

So here's what's planted:

Peaches & Cream x 1,500 +/- (May 10th)
Golden Queen x 400 (June 1st)
Early Sunglow x 400 (June 1st)

Prolly gonna have to water all the gardens Tuesday, then the rainy days start Thursday.

I forgot to mention, my wife planted that second set of tobacco this morning when I was tilling.

Got 61 tobacco plants going now. 😟

Ray when do I harvest this garlic. I’ve got yellowing on most leaves on first row. Second row the very bottom leaves are yellow Second row looks better but I also believe the soil is better over just a bit away from the lawn. Always grew better tomatoes there

Think it's nitro time on Sunday--for da corn.

I'd guess some of the corn is 12 to 14 inches tall, but some is barely 8. So that's why I held off.

Mild temps and on and off rain expected. Should be a good time to do it.

The second set of corn is just now starting to pop up--it's just above ground.

There is the old saying "Knee high by 4th of July" when it comes to corn.

We've had some odd weather here in MA. Hot, cold, hot, cold. A bunch of rain every weekend. The tomatoes and peppers are doing well. The pole beans and peas that I started from seed are a bit behind schedule. I think they will go strong once the weather evens out.

Had to redo Sunflowers from seed again. The first ones didn't survive. The sprouts have been popping just this past week inside so I'll try to put them outside weather permitting.

The herbs seem to be settling in I just gotta keep them watered (basil, oregano, rosemary, parsley, chives). The thyme died.

The green onions are going strong so that's good. Just planted the bulb things from the grocery store after I used up the greens. They seem easy peasey to grow.

The garlic, not so much. I haven't seen them pop up from the soil so I suspect that that experiment was a flop.

Trying to do some cat nip for out car that thinks he's a dog. Seed broke ground but the sprouts look rather fragile. Not sure it's going to work out but not pulling the plug yet. Maybe I can find some catnip plants at the local garden center.

If not, then the poor guy won't be able to get high (poor guy, get high... I made a rhyme).

Hoe'd da garden for about an hr then applied the 30-0-4 fertilizer to the first set of corn.

The second set of corn is looking pretty good. That Earthway brand seeder worked really well.

It made the rows are nice and uniform. It's a real time saver for sure.

For you, if you have already harvested scapes a while back, and you've got about 1/3 of the lower leaves yellowing, dig one up and have a look at the bulb.
Be careful you don't dig too close to the bulb and stab it. You want to just loosen the soil around it so you can pull up the plant easily.

Ate some garlic mashed potatoes tonight. They were blissful. Will continue to grow garlic. I’m disappointed in yield. Small heads/cloves. Will adjust. I intend to properly grow this stuff. However on my first go with it I’m satisfied. Good stuff. Heads are pink striped but about the size of a walnut. Some are larger but that’s approximate

Weeded the 🌽 rows with the tiller. (Both sets)
Wife weeded around the actual cornstalks.
Saw the first few beetles / June bugs of the season; so we applied "Sevin" insect killer to the first set of 🌽.
The second set is about ready for da nitro, but I'm going to hold off for at least a week. Supposed to be really hot, and no rain, for 6 days, starting Friday.
So, I'll wait for a rain and a cool down before I apply it. Don't want to burn the 🌽 up because it's either not quite ready or because it's too hot outside.

I don't like how this new format won't let you space out your sentences. It automatically puts em all together.
How the frank is Frank supposed to read this stuff without proper spacing!?!?

I changed my mind on da nitro for second set of corn.

I applied it last night and it worked out fine. Got heavy rain and cool temps last night and today.

Got to thinking, I just couldn't wait another week. Gonna be low to mid 90's and no rain for quite a while, aLLegEdlY. So I went out and randomly measured the corn. Most of it is 8 to 10 inches tall. So I took the chance on the few that are 6 inches. They seem to be doing fine.

Harvested a large zucchini this evening. First of the season. Had my wife fry it up.
We usually don't eat fried foods on weekdays but I made an exception in this case. Hadn't had one in so long...

The Habano 2000 is bigger. One of my Nica Rustica plants is about to flower--I'll try to get a pic when it does.

Topped (cut off flowers) a few of my Nica Rustica tobacco plants. I'd say the Habano 2000 and H99 Corojo will be ready to top in the next week.
Also removed all of the sucker leaves from the plants.

By doing those two things it allows the plant to send all of it's energy to the big leaves.

I'm going to let my best two plants, of each variety, go to seed (get flowers + seed pods) so I'll have seeds for next year-- won't have to buy them from the store. I read that each seed pod can contain up to 1,000 seeds, and a single plant can produce up to 100,000 seeds.

Also, was going to fertilize the second set with triple 10, but it's too hot and dry out there. Calling for several days of rain starting Friday, I'll do it then.
