My kid time memories were jogged this morning when a reader on the Green Bay Packers website asked a question about the new kickoff rule and mentioned the old-school electric football game. Instantly reminded me of playing with friends as well as solo. Had almost forgotten how noisy and annoying it must have been for my parents. Painted one team the Packers (of course!) and the other the Browns. Not satisfied with just the two, I saved my allowance money and bought two more “teams”. Those two became the Chiefs and Cowgirls (pre-Jerry Jones). Good test of eye-hand coordination. Looking back, that was pretty nerdy.

But all-in-all, good stuff.

Anyone else have memories of the pre-video game game?

I have BOUGHT AND SOLD AT LEAST
15? OF THOSE DARN TUDOR ELECTRIC FOOTBALL GAMES...

THAT shiiit was state of the art back in 1965++!
We spent hours doing that game...
Invariably, the games I found in the trash, or dumpsters or yard sale were never complete...

"Buyer beware" ( famous saying in greek?)
Millennial dumb ass customer: " are all the pieces in the box"
Me : " oh yeah, it's a complete set"
" not sure, got it at a yard sale"
" ummmm, I think so, go ahead and chk"

I sold them all...
None of them were complete...

" buyer beware"

Bwuhahahahaha!!!

I had the NFL version of electric football...basically a vibrating metal sheet...tiny plastic football players on felt bases that went in the direction you faced them...line 'em up and turn the power on and see how they move...QB had a spring loaded arm.....put the little ball in the QB's hand, pull arm back and let it fly towards the receiver...hadda hit the receiver/player.....tough to complete passes.

I still have mine from the 60s.
Spent countless hours with friends and by myself.
Also had a fairly stupid game called “Photo Electric Football”…

And then there was “All Star Baseball”, with the circular player cards you put into the spin deally to see how the players at bat went…

Fun times

I had the NFL version too but never seen the players on felt bases. My players were either the “bigs” with the molded plastic bases or the smaller ones with removable bases. One of the great things was to find a base that could actually go straight and not curl off to the side or go around in circles. Putting one of the straight bases on a “skilled” position player allowed for some long TD runs. There was, supposedly, a way to adjust the little prongs (…for lack of a better term…) under the bases but no matter what I did, it never worked.

There is a way to bend the prongs, but I forgot how to do it.
Not sure if they still exist, but years ago, I saw somewhere (youtube, ??), that Electric Football has made a resurgence.
Leagues, rule changes, tournaments, super bowls, the works……..mostly on the east coast if I recall correctly.

Years ago I saw a report on the electric football tournament(s) on the news but don’t remember any details. Never thought the game would ever garner such fandom.
