I know the law says come to a complete stop at the intersection. However...

I've lived in the same middle-of-nowhere place since I was 6 years old. The traffic hasn't changed since the north-only ramp was made north-south more than 20 years ago. When I exit the highway there I rarely stop because I can see what's coming down the main road into town for at least 2 miles. Usually that means nothing.

Are there places on your regular route where you SHOULD stop EVERY TIME but you don't because you know the area well? Just curious.

no because cops in IL give a ticket for rolling stops.

Do I still roll? yes but I can't saythere is any particular place where I always do.

If I have 100% visibility, I usually roll, but around these little towns, the neighborhoods are built with the houses very close to the road, so you often CANNOT see......in which case I stop and then inch out.

At the end of my road, there is a stop sign with visibility up and down the road. No one ever stops there, including myself. There is very little traffic there.

what Bass said... here in Illinois they'll nail yer arse...

off topic, while my son was in the hospital, they brought in another motorcycle rider into ICU..who did stop fully at the stop sign... the car in front of him rolled through... the driver in a truck behind him thought that seeing the car in front did it the motorcyclist would also do a roll and go... the driver in the truck ran completely over the motorcycle and the guy on it.. he passed away in ICU the next day, he was a organ doner so they kept him hooked up to retrieve the organs he donated... I myself have been tagged from cars behind me thinking I was going to roll and go.. it was there dumb ass fault my bumper hitch on the truck took out their Grill and scratched their hood!!

For the record: No.

Off the record: Of course! If you could see that there are no other vehicles and that it is safe to proceed before you get to the stop sign, I see no reason to come to a complete stop. A "rolling stop" is ok in my book.

Yeaup... do it all the time. Just depends on the circumstances, really. Doesn't matter where.

Stop Totally Optional. Proceed.

Cop in town gave the priest a ticket for running the stop sign in front of my house. You think he'll let me go?

I stop everytime. Though here in Oregon we do have quite a few "right turn permitted without stopping" signs at particular intersections. On those....I blow on through

I usually stop completely. I got a ticket about 30 years ago for a rolling stop (that was perfectly safe)where the cop could see me and I could not see him (kind of like a speed trap).

Stop signs in Colima, Mexico aren't even a suggestion. My wife tells me that If I come to a complete stop when there is no traffic we will be hit from behind.

If I knew the area well and see I have the chance, I'll roll through. Like with Andy though, around the newer developments I take more caution since everything is built closer together.

If you knew some of the neighborhoods I drive through on my way to and from work, you would understand why I cannot stop.

Actually, if the stop sign has a White border, then it's a STOP OPTIONAL sign. This only applies when there are no other cars AND no cops in the area either.

When I work night shifts and get off at 5:00 am on Saturday or Sunday I usually just slow down and proceed. Hell, I also run the red lights on the turn signalsdown near work. I work in a very industrial part of Long Beach (at an oil refinery) down by the port and the roads are miles long. I can definitely see any traffic coming. There is nothing worse than sitting at a red light for nobody at 4:40am. I can get carjacked just sitting there, so I'm actually preventing a crime while commiting one???? Yeah that's what I'll tell the judge :o)

I've been ticketed for that before. In CA it used to be called a 'California Stop'. I dont know if any of you ever heard that term used before. Maybe it was someting said where I was from(Santa Barbara).

I rarley roll stop. I have a pet peve about petty little stupid tickets! I hate those stupid 80 dollar tickets when that one sheriff is sitting out in the middle of know where just getting done pulling pot plants that someone planted in a cornfield.. i happen to be out scouting for deer and BLAM.... NAILED FOR THE SLOW AND GO!!. sooooo.. i am pretty anal about coming to a complete stop. A little conflict avoidance. One of my best friends was almost killed by a guy that did a slow and go and juuussst happened not to see him coming because he was in a hurry. So as much as I slammed the a**hole for about killing my friend to get home 2 minutes quicker from work.... i try not to be a hypocrite about it and stop all the way and really look. Some times our brain plays trick on us when we are always in a hurry. I am sure we have all had those experiences.. where our brain tell us "its clear" we go to pull out.. then...OHH SH*T..SLAM ON THE BREAKS halfway out because we were in a hurry and jussst didnt see that bright red pickup bareling our way... even though it was out in the "wide open"!!!

Try to stop all the way..... those pork chops.. stogie and good brew will keep a couple extra minutes at home!! lol

I have heard that term used around here (Pittsburgh) regularly.........never quite understood it though.
