If they want to loan you money, tell them you just filed for bankruptcy and you could sure use some money. Ask, "How long can I keep it? Do I have to ever pay it back, or is it like the other money I borrowed before my bankruptcy?"

If they start out with, "How are you today?" say, "Why do you want to know?" Or you can say, "I'm so glad you asked, because no one seems to care these days and I have all these problems, my sciatica is acting up, my eyelashes are sore, my dog just died...." When they try to get back to the sales process, just continue on with telling about your problems.

If the person says he's Joe Doe from the XYZ Company, ask him to spell his name, then ask him to spell the company name, then ask where it is located. Continue asking personal questions or questions about the company for as long as necessary.

This one works better if you are male: Telemarketer: "Hi, my name is Judy and I'm with Canter and Siegel services.... You: "Hang on a second." (few seconds pause) "Okay, (in a really husky voice) what are you wearing?"

Crying out, in well-simulated tones of pleasure and surprise, "Judy!! Is this really you? I can't believe it! Judy, how have you BEEN?" Hopefully, this will give Judy a few brief moments of terror as she tries to figure out where the heck she could know you from.

Say, "No," over and over. Be sure to vary the sound of each no, and keep an even tempo even as they're trying to speak. This is the most fun if you can keep going until they hang up.

If MCI calls trying to get you to sign up with their Family and Friends plan, reply, in as sinister a voice as you can muster, "I don't have any friends...would you be my friend?"

If they clean rugs: "Can you get blood out, you can? Well, how about goat blood or HUMAN blood - chicken blood too?"

Let the person go through their spiel, providing minimal but necessary feedback in the form of an occasional "Uh-huh, really, or, "That's fascinating." Finally, when they ask you to buy, ask them to marry you. They get all flustered, but just tell them you couldn't give your credit card number to someone who's a complete stranger.

Tell them you work for the same company they work for. Example: Telemarketer: "This is Bill from Watertronics." You: "Watertronics!! Hey I work for them too. Where are you calling from?" Telemarketer: "Uh, Dallas, Texas." You: "Great, they have a group there too? How's business/the weather? Too bad the company has a policy against selling to employees! Oh well, see ya."

Answer the phone. As soon as you realize it is a telemarketer, set the receiver down, shout or scream "Oh my God!!!" and then hang-up.

Ask them to repeat everything they say, several times.

Tell them it is dinner time, BUT ask if they would please hold. Put them on your speaker phone while you continue to eat at your leisure. Smack your food loudly and continue with your dinner conversation.

Tell the telemarketer you are on "home incarceration" and ask if they could bring you some beer.

Tell the telemarketer, "Okay, I will listen to you. But I should probably tell you, I'm not wearing any clothes."

Insist that the caller is really your buddy Leon, playing a joke. "Come on Leon, cut it out! Seriously, Leon, how's your momma?"

Tell them you are hard of hearing and that they need to speakup... louder... louder... louder...

Tell them to talk VERY SLOWLY, because you want to write DOWN EVERY WORD.

Tell the Telemarketer you are busy and if they will give you their phone number you will call them back. If they say they are not allowed to give out their number, then ask them for their home number and tell them you will call them at home (this is usually the most effective method of getting rid of Telemarketers). If the person says, "Well, I don't really want to get a call at home," say, "Yeah! Now you know how I feel." (smiling, of course...)

When they say "Mr. Smith... may I call you John" say "no." This really seems to throw them. They have real trouble getting back on their spiel.

My own proven method of dealing with telemarketers:

Go to Wal-Mart.

Buy a Coach's Whistle in the Sporting Goods Department, approximately $1.99.

Lay the whistle beside the phone.

When the phone rings, verify it's a telemarketer.

Warn your wife.

Wait for the person to come on the line and begin talking.

Blow the whistle as close to the phone and as loudly as you can.

Listen for any response.

Blow the whistle again.

Hang up.

Replace the whistle.

Enjoy a good laugh with a primo cigar, while you wait for another call.

This has proven to lower your blood pressure 20 - 80 points.

My alternate method for dealing with telemarketers (for times when I have a headache):

Answer the phone.

Determine it's a telemarketer.

Say nothing, no matter what they say. Nothing.

If you can manage a really loud fart, place the receiver in close proximity of your buttocks.

Say nothing.

It drives them nuts.

Makes me surprisingly happy.

TD,

no offense intended, but I bible-thump them.

tell them that you have found Jesus, and that you would like to help them find their way ALSO. Tell them that if they started every call by saying a prayer with the person they are calling that they can spread the good word........etc......etc......

Ask them to pray with and repeat what you say.....etc.

They usually don't last for more than a few minutes.

When door to door folks come by, I invite them upstairs for a bath.

My favorite is the mortgage telemarketers. They start with their speal and I usually ask them if they can match a 4.5% 30 year fixed. It's impossible and usually shuts them up right quick. Then they just say goodbey and hangup.

These idiots are lookin' for suckers to sign up for those 1.1% loans. Anyone gettin' a VAR loan right now is in for a big surprise in 3 to 5 years.

My other favorite thing to due is just hang up when they start their speal. It's rude, and I love it.

I act really interested throughout the whole spiel... then I say, hold on while I go grab my credit card. Then I set the receiver down and see how long it takes them to realize they've been duped.

I can tell that I have a lot more patience than you guys. 1st, I have caller ID, so if it's a number I don't know or a 1-8XX I don't pick up the phone. If I do happen to pick up the phone I let them give me their initial spiel and tell them I'm not interested and to take me off of their list (they must do it by WA State law). Most of the time they say thanks and that is that. If they continue I will interupt them and say in a firm voice "I said no thank you. Good day." Then hang up. I see no reason not be civil with them.

My sense of humor almost got me in a bunch of trouble. Back in my crazier days, a telemarketer from a carpet cleaning company asked if they could come over for a demonstration. Clean one room for free.

(Maybe some of you know this already, but if not, let me warn you right now..... I have a unique sense of humor).

So I kick into acting gear. I think about the saddest times in my life and am actually able to get some tears going and my voice was wavering and cracking.

8track: Does the carpet cleaner get blood stains out?

Telemarketer: Yes.

8: OH God.......... can you come over now?

Telem: Well, we can set up...

8: Because the blood (starting to cry quietly) the blood.... is..... on the floor... the . the ..blood is in the cur cur curtains.... (louder crying now) there's just sooo much blood... the blood! I can't get in off me (whailing now) The BLOOD why why... there just... so much..... (sobbing) blood

Telemarketer is gone.

15 minutes later, there are four squad cars on my street.

oh-oh... I stepped outside and three officers had their hands on their sidearms, one with gun drawn.

Guess it wasn't so funny.

Whoops.

You guys still have land lines? I got rid of mine 5 years ago. Strictly cell phone. No telemarketers (yet) and save the cost of the home phone bill. Best thing I ever did.
