Was having trouble regulating humidity in my 'dors. It had been solid at 72% for several months. Decided to calibrate hygrometers. One digital and one guage type. Put them both in a plastic bag with some air and a bottle cap (Newcastle Nut Brown)cap with a paste of table salt and water. The gauge-type read 58%, the digital 84%. Thought the salt paste was supposed to give 75%. Time for new hygrometers?

the salt "paste is not to regulate, it's to tell you what it is reading at a fixed humidity. the hygrometers need to be calibrated now, so they will show 75 at 75. don't waste anymore money. i'll send you "the humidity article". [email protected]

You've probably figured this out, but with Rick's comment in mind, your analog gauge is off 17 points and your digital is over by 9. So if you did nothing, you would need to remember that when your analog reads 53, your 'dor is at 70%. When your digital reads 79, your 'dor is at 70%. Given of course I understand how this works and my math is correct.


salt test: 75% ideal: 70%
analog: 58% (-17 off) 53% (58+17=75-5=70)
digital: 84% (+9 over) 79% (84-9=75-5=70)

The analog unit is easily adjustable ... the digital is probably not and you'll need to do the math ...

IMONSHO, analog units are functionally worth nothing except as "show" ... that is, they LOOK good and impress the unknowledgeable ... I've got one digital unit I rotate among my humis just to be sure where I stand, but find that through experience, the condition of the smokes tells me more than any hygrometer could ... I don't have a hygrometer of any kind in my humi on my desk at work, but could come pretty close to telling you what the conditions are ...

Sorry to dampen your spirits but: relative humidity is defined as the amount of water vapor in the air divided by the amount that the air could hold before the water condenses(that is, it rains). This depends on several factors, the amount of water vapor, the temperature and the barometric pressure. It's not a simple proportion.

It's good to set up a test with a known value and mark the guage to that value, but that doesn't mean the guage will be reading correctly at any other combination of the factors.

Does anyone know what kind of technology is used in those digital hygrometers?

if the cigrs are not dryed out or soaking wet (which means about 30 seconds in the micro) smoke them.
