I think he's 100% full of it. I have found precious few cigars that are true "dog rockets" ... so very bad that I have to pitch it before it's smoked. The rest fall into my own categories. Basically I don't mow the yard while wasting a good smoke like a Hemingway Signature. And I don't go to a nice steakhouse with a Hamilton or a Lone Wolf. Come to think of it, I don't mow the yard with these either. Anyway I love CBID. It's given me access to try a huge variety of cigars - good, bad and indifferent - for not a lot of $$. And this forum's first class, too.

It's just his opinion. Whatever number you come up with is your opinion. That's the deal about cigars, it's your opinion what is good and what is bad.

I think Ironbar may have a more descriminating pallat than most high brows, but I do agree that you can find your share of dog rockets at cbid. I think I've tried most of them, but at least I'm not paying over a bucka stick for'm. And there have been some very pleasent surprises among the low priced lots. Thats part of the fun for me, plus I have plenty of cigars to pan off on my mooching golfing buddies.

As far as a definition, when I try one and it sucks, then age it for a few months and it still sucks, then let it sit for another few months and I still think it sucks....I define it as a dog rocket and put the rest in my garagador, and on Sat. morning I put a few in my golf bag for the aforementioned golfing buddies!

Good point. At least at CB it's a cheap lesson in dog rocketry....hell, I consider myself a dog rocket scientist because of CB!

a), I don't agree at all that this group is in any way comprised of "high-brows", and b), there are a great many in this group who have some demonstrably well-developed palates ...

My opinion is that in making the far-off-the-wall statement that 80% of what CBid sells are dog-rockets, what I think Ironbar has demonstrated is a less discriminating mouth ...

IMHO, Coming across cb/ci sites was the second biggest thing to happen to me since the first visit to the cigar shop. For a newbie like me, it's the perfect place to experiment and find what pleases MY individual palate. In the short 2 month span that I've been samplin, I can tell you that the onyx reserve torbusto is my fave so far and that I think the box of bootlegger figurados I've got are dog rockets. But isn't that what makes our "hobby" so wonderful? I know theres a *@$*load of cigars out there just waiting to be sampled by me. Ladies and Gentlemen, let the journey begin...uh, anyone like bootleggers? heh, heh...

Secondly, perhaps 80-20 was a bit harsh, but there's no denying that cbid sells alot of crap. So what?! One mans' trash is anothers' treasure. I don't begrudge a person like cully for smoking Curly Heads and Ras Tafari. Big deal.

Do I have a more discriminating palette? Maybe. Probably. I've smoked enough crap cigars in my time and life is too short to smoke any more. Cheers.

Price does not always reflect if a cigar qualifies as a "dog rocket". That being said, if you have to suck so hard that your eyes implode chances are you have got yourself a piece of canine excrement. Of course all of the things you mentioned are grounds to consider one such also.

Guys, a dog rocket is purely a personal thing. My dog rocket may not be your dog rocket. Here's how I define it -- a dog rocket is a cigar that I would rather give away than to smoke myself. Notice I said, give and not trade. Because they are, IMO, so bad I couldn't accept anything in exchange for them. The primal example of the dog rocket to me is -- Espinoza.

Victor Sinclairs are fuggin horrible. The Sinatra is terrible too. I have smoked a dog rocket or 1000,and i do believe it is a matter of opinion. There are some though (very very few) that are a matter of fact. Some expensive cigars are terrible and some cheap azz cigars are great. Majorly subject to interpretation.
