Who can explain this riddle.

1)General media (and possibly public) perceptions:

Democrats - Champions for personal freedoms and liberal viewpoints.

Republicans - Champions restrictions on personal freedoms and conservative viewpoints.

2) California - Generally speaking, a Democratic state with a strong liberal base and a history of pushing personal freedoms such as legalization of various drugs but has implemented some of the strictest anti-smoking legislation in the country.

Am I missing something, or is really screwy thinking?
