I'm planning on making my own personal humidor this summer and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas or experience in doing this. If so I'd love to hear about it.

Thats a beauty Robby what kind of wood did you use on the out side? Is it all SC or did you have a dif. kind on the outside with SC inside?

The outside is black wallnut. Lined with probably 3/8ths or so SC and then some insulation material (maybe an inch and a half) and then another 1/4 inch layer of SC. The top tray is SC and designed with cuts in the bottom so it breaths into the main body. The beauty of that box is it's craftsmanship and the electronics/design (70/70 regardless of ambient conditions).

I refinished and converted an old armoire. Recently purchased a Moist-n-aire and also installed a small computer fan...works and looks great.

Am seriously thinking of a piece of furniture as well. Wife has a concern the living room will start smelling like a cigar store with active humidification and fans to move air. Is this a concern?

I get nothing but compliments on how good it smells when I open my cabinet...even from people that hate cigar smoke.

I agree, we both love the smell of the 'dor when opened up and greated by aged smokes. The real question is does a large end table style humidor empart the whole room with aroma while sitting there doing it's humidification thing 24/7.

The trick is to seal it well... That speaks to the tolerances and how it's built and glued, etc... The Ploomidoor "burps" when you close it. It doesn't really leak aroma into the room. If it does, it's imperceptible. It wasn’t like this when I brought it home. I had to insulate it, then seal it with another layer of SC. I also had to use weather stripping around the large lift top to get that ziplock seal… But it’s tight.

also, the sealer put on the outside wood (walnut) was water based, NOT oil based. Some kind of water based poly sealer. The father-in-law is really in to wood working and he researched it on his woodworking boards.

The bottom is solid SC about an inch thick, wiht insulation then a 1/4 inch SC again. It breaths somewhat through there I'm sure, as well as through the glass seal in the top (slight).

First off, thanks Shua for the use of this post to discuss construction. I hope I did not take it in a direction that is not related to your original.

Robby, you speak of insulating and then another layer of SC. What did you insulate with, and the "Burp" I have read on the forum that a 'dor needs to breeth, does yours purge and cirulate air?

I tried to express to my father-in-law when he built it that he was building a refrigerator. He did not see my POV. he delivered a box. And it breathed readily. I sealed it better with some Elmers wood glue in the seams. Also, I put in fiberglass insulation, and then lined it with 1/4 inch SC. Basically framed it like a house on the inside. i.e., the studs were 2 pieces of half inch pink foam insulation cut in to tiny strips (like 2x4s in the wall) and then between them was the fluffy insulation., then what would be the sheetrock, was actual 1/4 SC. It was VERY time consuming... But the result is a humidor which holds both it's temperature and humidity like a rock.

So from the outside, it’s ½ walnut, 3/8 SC, 1+ inch insulation, ¼ SC.

This was overboard, yes. But in the end, I feel it was worth it.
