Is this pic doctored? It seems unusual that you would see 6 carriers bunched up like this.

Actually, they aren't carriers. They are large deck amphibous assault ships. We carry Marines and their equipment to wherever they need to go. There are a number of other, lesses known missions of this type of ship, but that is the main one. The ship's crew consists of about 1200 sailors, and carries around another 2000 or so marines.

The large deck amphibious assault ships are related to the carriers of WW2 somewhat. Similar displacement to the earlier carriers without angled flight decks, similar dimensions. Hence, they have been named for some of the ladies of WW2 ie: Essex and Wasp classes.

Pretty beautiful sight to see these together. At first glance they look like the old style carriers.

Oh yea, I remember that day! Couldn't leave the skin of the ship until they were done taking pics of the ships! Glad it's over, next cruise I hope we stay in the Med!

no kidding!! We didn't hit a single port, unless you want to cound Bahrain (which I don't, since it was a working port).

Well did better than us! The only port we hit was Rota on the way back to the Lant. 148 days straight out at sea.

Thanks. It's not too often you get that many carriers in one place. When was the picture taken? Do you know the lineup? My son is with Carrier Wing 7 on the Washington right now. I'll be sure to share this picture with him. Again, thanks for the picture.

mhollowa,

ATF East ships: USS SAIPAN, USS KEARSARGE, USS BATAAN.

ATF West ships: USS ESSEX, USS BON HOMME RICHARD, and USS BOXER.

Tarheel was on the Kearsarge and I was on the Saipan. Both ATFs were part of Task Force Tarawa which was the Marines that invaded Iraqi on the onset of war. Another Amphib not picture here is the USS Nassau.

Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) was totally an Amphib war (as far as the Navy goes). I think they said this is the largest Amphibious operation since D-Day but don't qoute me 🙂

Yeah....what he said. And, we are not carriers, we are Amphibous Assault Ships.
