Yesterday, while using a "freebie" plastic cutter supplied by my local cigar shop, I nearly lopped off my thumb when the thing literally came apart! Anyone have a similar mishap?
While I sit here looking at a nasty 1/2" cut in my formerly 54 (now 52) ring guage thumb, I figure it's time to buy a reliable guillotine cutter. I'm sure you brothers and sisters of the leaf can give me some advise on which you like best. Thanks!

Sue the ba$tards! And buy a Swiss Army Knife Cutter (SAK)

Sorry to hear about your luck!

I highly recommend an Xikar, but they limit you on the ring gauge to a 52 I think. The Swiss Army Knife might be a better way to go if you smoke bigger gauge sticks.

That just happened to me a few days ago. Fortunately it was a near miss or as George Carlin would say "A near Hit! A collision is a near miss!" Still have all my Bass fingers, knock on wood.

Bought these the other day. Good deal. Excellent cutters.

I got a "Stackhouse" double guillotine ($5) coming with my latest CBid package. I saw one at my local smoke shop and it seemed o.k. Anyone have any opinions on that rig?

Exacto #11. I cut a small hole (as a punch cutter would). If draw is tight, dig a little deeper. Always works for me. I've been looking at cigar scissors, but then I think 'one pair of scissors or another five pack of smokes?'. I always go for the smokes. My freebie fell apart too. I still say never buy anything made in China.

LAXMAN: Thanks for the thread info. I didn't search that far back. I usually use a tee as a punch when on the links....works OK.

I use a SAK, Xikar, Palio, Teakwood V-Cutter (almost identical to the Boston Pocket V-Cutter), several diiferent stainless cutters (Highland, Marquee and Lane Ltd.) and several different punch cutters ... and I love them all!

My favorite cutters though (the one's I use almost all the time) are the Teakwood V-Cutter, Swiss Army Knife and the Palio ... not necessarily in that order!

Xicar is the most popular choice and an excellent cutter ... it is guaranteed for life and they will sometimes replace your cutter with a new one when you send it in for sharpening or repairing ...

Palio is the best cutter ... it is a surgical instrument, can also serve as a cigar rest and is also guaranteed ...

SAK is extremely popular choice and is also high quality ... it has the additional advantage of working well on the largest gauge cigars ...

None are inexpensive, but all can be obtained at prices significantly below the MSRP if you check around ... any of the three will cost you $30something if you do your shopping homework ...

After serious thought......Robby is right. I'm gunna sue the ba$tard for a new plastic cutter!
Or, maybe I'll just trade for a good one since some of you guys have way too many.

You really ought to try the teakwood V-Cutter. It will cut a 54 ring gauge cigar like cheese ... and it's really the one I use the most.

The Boston Pocket V-Cutter sells for $125 to $150, and the only difference between them and the Teakwood one, is that they are available in a variety of woods: Lime, Curly Maple, Rose, Black Walnut, Lacewood and Bloodwood. For me ... the teak is nice enough, and I got it for under $30.

I think I really threw a 'wrench in the spokes' on a group buy over at CF (it's actually running on several forums) for the Boston V-Cutter. This guy said he could get them for $89, and quite a few people were jumping in like lemmings ... until I posted the site for the teak. It stopped dead in it's tracks after that ... hehehe! Yeah, I know ... I'm 'pure evil'.

I'm with Cayman on this one. Got mine for the same clams and is as good as new a year later.

I keep hearing about all these cutters. I used a cheap one, or should I say a bunch of cheap ones. Then I got a deal on a couple of boxes, of Montecristo,Le Cigare L'an 2000, believe it or not, 2 boxes of 12 cigars, in glass tubes, for $56 after taxes. Yep both boxes, for $56. Each box has, a cutter. Good quality double bladed cutters. Now I have 1 beside my tabletop Humi, and one rides in the console of my truck. I am never without a good quality cutter.
After using a good cutter, will never go back to using the cheapos.

Xikar for me! I have other cutters, punches, etc and a whole lotta cheapo freebie ones, and do not use them all or have no plan to use them. I use the bullet punch once in a while, but it seems to maul the damn cigar more than work.

Xikar is my choice and I will probably pick up on a SAK if opportunity is right and mood strikes me!

My bad ... I just checked the site, and the Teakwood V-cutter is on sale for $19 !!!

... I think it's time for me to pick up a couple of spares (and who know's, maybe even trades)!
