I've been hoping someone would bring up this topic. I just bought a box of cigars that arrived uncelloed! Is there a service somewhere, not too expensive, that can put cello on the cigars? Or should I just call Trish at customer service and complain?

Slim, you must have a better environment than mine. 🙂

Of course there are good arguments both ways.

Everyone, If you ever want to see just how permeable those cello wrappers are, fill one up with water and see how much gets through without going through the seams. It is an interesting experiment.

Hummmm, very intersting question, cello on? Or cello off? Hummmm.....

permeable to air does not necessarily mean permeable to water... different sized molecules.

^ Shawn, what have I told you about reading books? Now sit down & rest. 😉

I've actually heard that the cello can "dehydrate" the cigar.

Either way, if you're concerned, just cut off the ends of the cellophane- leaving just enough to cover the cigar.

Eventually, I don't think that you'll care either way.

Welcome aboard!

I have many cigars that have bloom/plume on them, and they are in cello ...

... they also protect delicate wrappers, especially if you carry them around or ship them in trades ... and the cello is permeable, so they get plenty of humidity.

I use to take them off ... but I rarely do anymore ... as it just doesn't make that much of a difference.

WOW ... did I just aswer that?

Yes, you did ... but on the bright side, your response has the virtue of being (IMNSHO) definitive ...

(oh, and btw, eleltea ... call and complain, then get back to us with a full report, would you please?)

Many things are permable to vapor and are not to liquid. See Gore Tex as a good example. It has to do with the size of the mesh, and the physics of cohesion.

I think..

I have always said cello off, but lately I am trying to leave the cello on some cigars just to see if there is any difference...............so far hard to tell!

Later updates on this long awaited test...LMAO!

a molecule of water is the same size whether it is airborne or not

If water can't get in, neither can air, at least that is what I was always told when it came to potentially drowning... LOL

Yo-Yo Ma.....I rest my case.

the cellophane is not impervious to either water or air, although it is resistant to both ... it will serve only to retard humidification or de-humidification, whichever may be the case, but it will NOT prevent either ...

BUT, as Slim noted above, it DOES have the virtue of offering protection to the wrapper on the cigar ... good reason to leave it on IMNSHO ...

and, Yo Yo Ma is good, but man, that Pablo Casals was good too ... maybe better ... (ergo, the ongoing debate)

OK, the standard summary

Cello - on

keeps the cigars in good condition (True)

keeps them from marrying (BS)

Cello - off

They age faster/better (True)

They look better that way (pure opinion)

It really doesn't matter, it is just a matter of opinion. But there are clear points that are just piles of BS, like the issue about cigars flavor loss/gain from other cigars in the humidor. Having a POS cigar sitting next to a PAM or even surrounded by PAMs will not ever make it taste like a PAM.

However, like many discussions where there is no real one answer, it is fun to bring up on occasion. Like Slim saying he has got some nice plume/bloom despite the cello being on, and I have never seen that. Thanks, Slim.

OK, I have to go home and count cigars.

I would like to start by saying to all for not using the search first. Next I thank all of you for your help with this. I will keep reading and try not to ask any more dumb questions... Thanks

Keep asking the questions. Some people get bored with the same question over and over, but others, like me, have nothing better to do. 🙂

Seriously, don't be afraid of these guys, they all love cigars just like you.

But, yes, it is a good idea to search first.

CAO Brazillia happens to be my favorite, but you really can't go wrong with anything they roll, IMHO.
